A-League 2019/20 Season Betting Preview and Picks
The 2019/20 season of A-League is just around the corner, with the opening match of the season taking place on Friday, October 11, between Adelaide United and Sydney FC. This year will mark the 43rd season of the top tier of the national Australian football league and the 15th since the establishment of A-League in 2004.
Since its inaugural season in 2005, the A-League has seen six different crowned as champions and seven teams that won the Premiers. As it stands now, Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory are the two leading teams with four titles each. Brisbane Roar reside closely behind with three, whereas Central Coast Mariners, Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets all have only one title to their name. As far as Premiers are concerned, Sydney and Melbourne Victory claimed three each, Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United won three each, whereas Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth claimed one each.
The 2019/20 season of A-League will as mentioned kick off on October 11, 2019, and end on 16/17 May 2020 with the Grand Finals. Just like any season before, we will get to welcome new players and new coaches. That being said, the 2019/20 season of A-League will also feature a completely new team joining the fight for the ultimate glory of claiming the title of Australian champions. The newcomers to the A-League, which now prides itself with 11 teams in total are Western United, a club based in the western Melbourne suburb of Truganina.
As far as managerial changes are concerned, the list looks as follows:
Brisbane Roars: Darren Davies (Out), Robbie Fowler (In)
Wellington Phoenix: Mark Rudan (Out), Ufuk Talay (In)
Melbourne City: Warren Joyce (Out), Erik Mombaerts (In)
Adelaide United: Marco Kurz (Out), Gertjan Verbeek (In)
Melbourne Victory: Kevin Muscat (Out), Marco Kurz (In)
Western United: Mark Rudan (In)
The last term we saw Perth Glory claim the Premiers with an impressive run that saw them claiming the number one spot in the league only four rounds into the 2018/19 season, and they never looked back. In the end, Perth finished eight points ahead of Sydney FC, and 10 points ahead of the third-placed Melbourne Victory. In the Finals series, however, it was Sydney FC who came out ahead of Perth Glory after penalties, which Sydney convincingly won 4-1.
Will we be looking at yet another dominant show from Sydney, who have won either the league or the finals series for the last three years, or is there another team that can make them bleed remains to be seen. That being said, let’s look over the two team who we believe have what it takes to leave a mark in the 2019/20 season of A-League.
Newcastle Jets arrive into 2019/20 season as seventh favorites to win the minor premiership, which considering their seventh-place finish last season seems like a fair assessment. it’s fair to say Newcastle Jets can’t be too happy with their performance the last term, considering they have finished second in the league a year prior and even made it to the grand finals the same year. It’s clear Newcastle are not as dominant as they would have hoped, however, we believe they still have the needed quality to leave a mark this term. Last term Jets failed to produce anything noteworthy, seeing how they finished seventh, however, we would go on and argue Jets played at least slightly better to what their final result would have you thinking. It’s worth noting Jets had the most shots on goal out of all teams the last term, which may not tell you a lot about their quality, however, it does paint a clear picture showing Jets are doing something right.
With the addition of Wes Hoolahan, Matthew Ridenton, Abdiel Arroyo, Matt Millar, Jason Hoffman, Dimi Petratos and Steven Ugarkovic among others, we believe Jets have enough oil in the tank to go the extra mile and secure a spot in the final series this term.
Prediction: Top 6 finish
Odds: 1.90 Bet365
Talking about going the extra mile, Sydney FC cannot be too happy they failed to win the minor premier last term, when they finished eight points behind Perth. That being said, Sydney are still the most consistent team in the last few years, which in their case means they have also been one of the most successful teams in the league. With an impressive history behind them it’s safe to say the expectations put on Sydney are huge and they seem to do their best to meet those expectations each year.
Entering the 2019/20 season, Sydney FC seem to have made all the right moves to reinforce their team with several additions as well as departures, meanwhile keeping the strong core intact. The departure of Alex Brosque was the main topic of discussion, as he was bound to leave a huge gap in the squad which Sydney had to fill. But with the signing of Barbarouses and Baumjohann, it’s safe to say Sydney have more than compensated for the departure of Brosque. Looking at Sydney’s offensive strength now, they boast with Le Fondre, Milos Ninkovic and Barbarouses, which should strike fear in any opponent, and for all the right reasons. If we throw in the mix the solid defense and experienced midfield, we are left with a team that will once more challenge the league.
Prediction: Sydney to win Minor Premiership
