AC Milan vs Sassuolo

When: Wednesday, April 21 – 18:30 CEST
Where: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan, Italy
Weather: Mostly cloudy, 14°C
Referee: Juan Luca Sacchi

March 7, 2021 – that’s the last time we saw AC Milan keep a clean sheet. Can they put an end to the poor defensive run?

Perhaps not tonight as they need to face the high-scoring Sassuolo who will visit them at the San Siro. The visitors have scored in 13 of their last 14 games and are surely planning to keep on doing so.

AC Milan Seem to Always Concede

With nine points short of their arch-rivals Inter and only seven rounds left to be played in the season, AC Milan’s chances of winning their first Serie A title since 2011 are as slim as they get.

Nevertheless, AC Milan will do all they can to keep the dream alive and make their city rivals sweat as long as possible, granted they have started to show some cracks of late. The good news is that Milan have been superb in the attack, with nine goals scored in the previous four Serie A games.

On a more negative note, they’ve been very pretty poor at the back, allowing at least a goal in each of their previous seven games across all competitions. In fact, the last time AC Milan kept a clean sheet was in early March when they beat Verona 2-0.

AC Milan’s defensive problems are largely due to missing key defenders, who have been struggling with injuries. Two defenders who started the most games this season for AC Milan are (probably) out – Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria.

Speaking of injuries, AC Milan also have problems in the midfield. Hakan Calhanoglu and Ismael Bennacer are both struggling with fitness and will likely sit out tonight’s match as well.

In the final third, Daniel Maldini remains injured, while Zlatan Ibrahimović seems ready to make his comeback. Still, AC Milan’s top-scorer might not start the game as he’s not 100% fit yet.

No Caputo, No Problems for Sassuolo

Francesco Caputo, Sassuolo’s top assist maker, and their second most prolific goalscorer is out with an injury. It’s been like that since the start of the month, but Sassuolo did not seem to miss him too much. Without Caputo in the squad, Sassuolo managed to score seven goals in four games.

The best thing is that they played against real heavyweights in two of those games – Inter and AS Roma. They managed a 2-2 draw with AS Roma on April 3.

Three days later, they lost 2-1 to Inter, but put on a superb performance. They had the ball in their possession for 68% of the game, with 14 goal attempts (in comparison to Inter’s eight).

With or without Caputo in the team, Sassuolo seem to be in a good scoring mood lately. Actually, it’s been like that since the start of the year, seeing how they lost only one of this year’s Serie A games without scoring a goal.

Another thing giving Sassuolo hope that they could continue their scoring run tonight is that they scored at least one in the last two meetings with AC Milan.

Unfortunately for them, they lost both with 2-1. Their record against AC Milan is pretty disappointing – the last time Sassuolo beat the Rossoneri was in 2016.

Maybe it’s time for that to change?

AC Milan vs Sassuolo Betting Tips

Knowing that both teams have been really good in the attack, it’s only reasonable to assume we’re going to see some goals tonight. The big question is which team will be more efficient in doing so

Despite being thought of as underdogs, Sassuolo look like a team that could outscore AC Milan tonight. If not, they should still be able to get themselves a point from their trip to the capital of Lombardy.

Prediction: Sassuolo +0.75 – 2.01 SBO
