Although Brentford are in better form (they finished the Championship regular season in third), Bournemouth will be the hosts for this match. Furthermore, there’s no denying that Bournemouth have plenty of talent in the squad.
Despite finishing the season in sixth (clinching a spot in the Play Offs by the skin of their teeth), we can’t forget that it was just a year ago, when this team played in the English top flight. They want to get back there ASAP, but going past Brentford might be a mission impossible for this team.
Bournemouth Show Signs of Slowing Down
Bournemouth are the highest-valued team in the English Championship with an estimated value of about €125 million, which is almost €20 million more than Brentford’s value. However, Bournemouth players haven’t exactly been showing that.
This team finished the season in sixth, which is the last spot leading into the Championship playoffs. As a result, they now have to face off with Brentford, who ended in third.
Bournemouth finished with 20 points fewer than the Championship winners, Norwich. What’s more, they lost all of their final three games of the season. That run includes losses to lost to Stoke, Wycombe, and Brentford, with whom they’ll meet again today.
The match happened a month ago, and it saw 10-men Brentford (Pontus Jansson got a red card in the 55th minute) securing a 1-0 win via Bryan Mbeumo’s goal in the 77th minute.
Bournemouth’s loss to Brentford in late April wasn’t the only defeat to the same opponent in the 2020-21 season. Brentford also beat them in December with 2-1.
Is It Time for Brentford to (Finally) Get to the Premier League?
Founded in 1889, Brentford is one of the oldest teams in England. However, the team from the western outskirts of London hasn’t achieved much in its history. Surprisingly enough, the Bees haven’t played in the top English tier yet.
The closest they got to the Premier League was in 2020 when they lost to Fulham in the Championship Play-Off Final.
They came close to booking a direct ticket to the Premier League this season but couldn’t keep up with Watford, who squeezed in second. The Hornets collected four points more than the Bees.
Nevertheless, Brantford are favored to win the Championship playoffs, although their job probably isn’t going to be easy. If they managed to go past Bournemouth, they would face the Swansea vs Barnsley matchup winner in the final.
On the bright side, Brentford are in superb form, with four straight wins and no losses since March 3, when they lost to Championship’s best team, Norwich.
