Cagliari vs AS Roma
Where: Sardegna Arena in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy
When: Sunday, April 25 – 18:00 CEST
Weather: Sunny, 18°C
Referee: Massimiliano Irrati
With two straight wins, Cagliari’s dreams of avoiding relegation are still very much alive. Even though they’re still in the relegation zone, they do have a decent chance of digging themselves out of the pit. Still, for that to happen, they need to continue winning points.
Beating AS Roma tonight is not going to be an easy job, especially knowing that Cagliari haven’t won this match since 2013. That said, AS Roma’s recent run suggests that Cagliari should have a decent chance of getting all three tonight.
Cagliari Determined to Stay in Serie A for Another Season
Cagliari are still in the relegation zone, but that might not be the case for too long. There are six more games left to be played, so there are still plenty of points left to grab. Considering how well they’ve been playing lately, that shouldn’t be too hard to achieve.
As a reminder, Cagliari are going into this game after two straight wins. They beat Udinese and Parma in their previous two matches. The win over Parma is especially important as this team is one of Cagliari’s main rivals for staying in the Italian top tier.
Unfortunately, Cagliari are going to be without several of their key men against AS Roma. They’re going to miss Radja Nainggolan who is suspended, as well as Marko Rog, Gaston Pereiro, and Alessio Cragno, who are all injured.
On the bright side, Cagliari are facing a team that might not be too fired up to win tonight’s game.
AS Roma Looking Forward to the Europa League
The team from the Italian capital are currently in the #7 place in Serie A. Their chances to qualify for one of the European cups doesn’t seem too great. At least not as far as qualifying through the domestic league is concerned.
However, they have a chance to ensure another season in Europe by winning this year’s Europa League. After beating Ajax in the quarterfinal, AS Roma are now in the semi-finals, where they’re slated to meet Manchester United.
The first part of the Europa League doubleheader with Man United is taking place in four days, meaning that AS Roma players’ might not be too focused on their Serie A campaign.
History has thought us that AS Roma underperform in the domestic league just before Europa fixtures. For instance, AS Roma lost to Parma just before the clash with FC Shakhtar Donetsk in March. More recently, we saw them play a draw with Sassuolo a few days before the game with Ajax.
Similarly to Cagliari, AS Roma are also without a couple of their first-team players. Leonardo Spinazzola, Stephan El Shaarawy, and Chris Smalling remain sidelined, while Roger Ibanez is suspended.
Cagliari vs AS Roma Betting Picks
Cagliari need points; AS Roma have other priorities. Furthermore, the Sardinians are playing good football of late, which hasn’t been the case for the team from the Italian capital.
Not only are we concerned with AS Roma’s poor recent showings. There’s also the fact that they’ll likely not be too concerned with winning in Serie A as opposed to reaching the finals of the Europa League.
Poor form and questionable motivation to win are two key reasons why we like the hosts more.
Prediction: Cagliari +0.00 AH
