Camila Giorgi and Zarina Diyas will lock horns on Thursday, July 17, in the 1/8 finals of 2021 Ladies Open Lausanne. They last met in August 2019 in Washington, when Giorgi won 2-0, improving her head-to-head record to 2-1.
Camila Giorgi vs Zarina Diyas
When: Thursday, July 15 – 17:30 CEST
Where: Tennis Club Stade Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland
Weather: Chance of Rain, 16°C
Camila Giorgi (WTA #61) and Zarina Diyas (WTA #102) square off in the Round of 16 of the 2021 Ladies Open Lausanne. Each player started their campaign with a 2-0 win in Round 1. Giorgi beat Ulrikke Eikeri (WTA #298) by 6-2,6-0; Diyas got the better of Simona Waltert (WTA #235) by 6-4,6-4.
Giorgi and Diyas are facing this evening in what’s going to be their fourth meeting. Giorgi leads the series 2-1, with their most recent match happening in August 2019. What’s interesting is that these two ladies have never played one another on clay, which is the surface used in Lausanne.
Camila Giorgi Favored to Win (For a Reason!)
The odds on the 29-year-old Italian player are currently somewhere around 1.33, which suggests that online bookmakers expect her to reach the quarterfinals with relative ease. No surprise there, as she’s ranked much higher than her next opponent.
Another reason why oddsmakers favour Camila Giorgi is that she’s been playing excellent tennis in 2021. Even though she didn’t reach too far at the 2021 Wimbledon, where she lost to Karolina Muchova in the second round, Giorgi played well at WTA Eastbourne.
There she reached the final four after eliminating the 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist Aryna Sabalenka (7-6, 0-6, 6-4). Unfortunately, Giorgi retired from her WTA Eastbourne semi-final bout against Anett Kontaveit in the first set while trailing 4-5.
What has to worry Giorgi, at least slightly, is that clay isn’t her favourite surface. This year, she’s played six matches on clay, including one in Lausanne. In the remaining five clay-surface matches, Giorgi won two and lost three.
In all of those matches, Giorgi lost at least one set. In fact, it seems that when she wins, Giorgi does it by a minimal margin. Such a scenario happened in four of the previous five matches that she won (on any surface).
Resilient Diyas Determined to Upset the Odds
The good news for Giorgi is that her opponent seems to dislike playing on clay as well. Zarina Diyas has played nine clay matches in 2021, winning only four and losing the remaining five.
Nevertheless, she does have some lovely memories from her bouts on the clay court. For example, she recently beat Heather Watson, Martina Trevisan, and Natalia Vikhlyanseva. Furthermore, Diyas took Elise Mertens to three sets at the French Open. She did the same against Ons Jebour last year.
When it comes to her history with Giorgi, Diyas won one of the three matches they played. Unfortunately for her, it happened a long time ago, in March 2014. In their next two meetings, Giorgi was victorious.
Camila Giorgi vs Zarina Diyas Betting Picks
Although there’s no doubt that Giorgi is a better and more successful player than Diyas, it’s hard to expect an easy win for the Italian. Diyas is a resilient player, which is a trait that has helped her beat some real heavyweights in the past and should help her stay in the match against Giorgi, who is not exactly known for winning her games in straight sets.
While Diyas might struggle to upset the Italian no.1, she can definitely snatch a set off Giorgi!
Pick: Zarina Diyas +1.50 Sets – 2.00 Pinnacle
