Danielle Collins vs Elena Rybakina

Where: San Jose State University in San Jose, California

The 2021 WTA San Jose, also known as the Silicon Valley Classic, has entered its quarter-final stage. One of the matchups in this round is Danielle Collins (WTA #36) vs Elena Rybakina (WTA #20).
When Bet365 initially published its odds, Collins was the favourite at 1.53. However, after Rybakina finished fourth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, bettors started putting money on her. As a result, the odds moved in her favour – from 2.53 to 1.80, and is now billed as the favourite to claim a victory and secure her spot in the semis.
The odds also changed when the tournament winner is concerned. At the moment of writing, Elena Rybakina is the #2 favourite to hoist the trophy at 4.00, behind Elise Merte, priced at 3.10.
Danielle Collins Wants to Upset the Odds
The 27-year-old American knows how to play big matches and has done well against several top-rated players not too long ago. For example, Danielle Collins won against Ashleigh Barty, the world no.1 female tennis player, in February at WTA Adelaide, a tournament that used hardcourts – same as the tournament in San Jose.
Furthermore, we also saw Collins edge out wins Karolina Pliskova on the hardcourt this year. In fact, her record on this surface in 2021 is 12-5, while her overall record this year is 24-9. Looking back, she has also won against Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin, and Belinda Bencic – all these wins happened within the past 24 months.
The best thing is that her form seems to be on the rise. Collins won seven in a row and has lost only three of the 15 games she has played since the start of the summer.
Elena Rybakina Might Be Too Tired to Win This Match
Elena Rybakina played six matches at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the most recent being the bronze medal match against Elina Svitolina. The match in question was played less than a week ago. Rybakina has since travelled over half the planet to get to California.
Sure, she’s had plenty of time to relax and rest before the start of the WTA San Jose. The question is whether she’s had enough time to analyze the play of her opponents? This goes especially for Collins, with whom she hasn’t played before.
Rybakina’s loss against Svitolina marked her second across her last five outings and third across the last 10. That includes defeats against Belinda Bencic (1-2) and Aryna Sabalenka, who beat her in three sets (2-1) in the 1/8 finals of Wimbledon.
Following her loss at the Olympics, Rybaking did well to win her San Jose opener against Claire Liu. However, she needed three sets, which is seems a bit much considering she was facing world no.108.
Danielle Collins vs Elena Rybakina Betting Picks
Both players had to play three sets in the previous round to get past their opponents. Collins beat her fellow American Sloane Stephens 2-1, while in Rybakina edged past Liu.
We expect to see another fierce battle at WTA San Jose, which could also see thee sets. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if Collins gets a win in straight sets
After all, she’s in great form, especially when fitness is concerned. Furthermore, it’s going to be a hot afternoon in San Jose, something that tired Rybakina might not be able to handle.
Pick: Danielle Collins – 2.10 at Pinnacle
