Detroit Lions vs Indianapolis Colts
When: Friday, August 27 – 19:00 EDT
Where: Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan
Weather: Scattered thunderstorms, 29°C
Week 3 of the 2021 NFL preseason starts on Friday evening with a clash between Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts. The game is played in Detroit, which should give at least some advantage to the Lions, who are trying to break their losing streak.
Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts are hopeful they could wrap up their preseason campaign with the third win in a row.
Matt Nagy to Rest the Lions’ Key Men
The 2021 NFL season starts in two weeks, so you can be sure coaches aren’t willing to risk injuring their key men. This goes especially for those teams that don’t have too many good backups. One such team is Detroit, whose key players will probably be on the bench on Friday evening.
You can be sure that coach Matt Nagy will keep his first-choice quarterback off the field against the Colts. Even though Jared Goff definitely needs some playing time to get more familiar with his teammates, losing the starting QB to an injury would mean a disaster for the Lions.
Goff did make his Lions’ debut already. It happened in Week 1 of the preseason when his team lost to the Bills. He didn’t do too great, but to be fair to the guy, the QB didn’t have much support from his teammates either. Pretty much the same happened in Week 2 with backup QBs, who couldn’t do much to prevent the Lions from losing to the Steelers.
Colts’ QBs Competing for the Starting Position in Week 1
The Indianapolis Colts play their first game of the 2021 NFL season on Sunday, September 12. They welcome the Seattle Seahawks that day and are expected to lose. One of the main reasons for that is that their new starting quarterback will not be able to lead the offence against. Why? Because Carson Wentz still hasn’t fully recovered from his injury.
So, who will be in the starting role of the Colts’ signal-caller? We don’t know yet as coach Frank Reich doesn’t want to reveal the answer. Perhaps he doesn’t know it himself.
That might be true because there are two names in the contest – Sam Ehlinger and Jacob Eason, two backup quarterbacks who have been sharing the playing time in the preseason.
Ehlinger has been slightly better so far than Eason, but this doesn’t mean he’ll get the job. There’s still one game left to be played, so Eason might be able to persuade the coach to pick him. That said, you can expect both of the QBs to give their utmost against the Lions. And that means that we should see the Colts scoring plenty of points!
By “plenty,” we mean more than in the previous two games. As a reminder, they scored 21 against the Panthers and 12 against the Vikings. Luckily for them, their defence did a wonderful job in those games.
Detroit Lions vs Indianapolis Colts Betting Pick
This is going to be the battle of backups. Simply put, Colts’ backups are better than those playing for the Lions. Plus, their QB backups are very motivated as their performance in this game will decide who gets the starting position in Week 1 of the regular season.
