EURO 2020 Top Goalscorer – The best football players shine on the big stage, and we’re fortunate enough to have competitions like EURO 2020, where those superstars can show off what they’re made of – while we sit out our couch and eat crisps.
Competitions of this magnitude never fail to produce exciting and breath-taking goals, which often find their place on the list of the best goals in the history of the sport. That includes Antonin Panenka’s famous goal against Germany in the 1976 EURO finals.
The upcoming EURO 2020 won’t lack firepower, as it will feature top goalscorers from all major leagues in Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, and the Premier League. What’s more, over half of the “Big Four” leagues top-five goalscorers will attend the tournament, so you can be sure there will be plenty of talent running around on the pitch.
Even though being a top-goal scorer of a major league is a massive achievement, their domestic success doesn’t necessarily translate to international tournaments. In fact, there were very few league top scorers who ended EURO with top goalscoring honours.
The last player to achieve that feat was Alan Shearer in 1996, who netted 31 goals in the Premier League and five at the EURO. Knowing that opens up plenty of betting opportunities we can take a look at – and the best part of that is all the high betting odds we get to choose from.
Harry Kane – England
Odds: 6.50
Harry Kane has been an irreplaceable figure for Tottenham this season, scoring 23 goals and adding 14 assists in the Premier League. That was good for the Golden Boot and Playmaker award.
Kane has also won the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot and seems to be on the right path to add another goalscoring honour to his name. He has contributed 15 goals for his nation in the qualifiers and 10 goals across six games, so he is definitely in the goalscoring mood.
To make things even more appealing – Kane is the designated penalty taker for England, which could be the difference-maker when betting on the EURO 2020 top goalscorer. Despite all that, the price on Kane is way too low for us to pull the trigger on him.
Romelu Lukaku – Belgium
Odds: 8.00
Romelu Lukaku will enjoy the luxury of playing in Group B, which isn’t exactly a group where the Belgian striker will have a hard time finding the back of the net. However, you can’t really say he would struggle scoring goals against elite teams, considering Lukaku has led Inter Milan to the Serie A title this season with 24 goals on the season.
And it’s not like he has had one good season – far from it. Lukaku has bagged 23 goals for the Nerazzurri last season and ended Inter’s Europa League campaign as the second-best scorer of the tournament.
There is no denying Lukaku is in his prime and rightfully a solid favourite to end EURO 2020 on a high note. Lukaku stands out from the rest due to his efficiency with the ball, which he has put on full display this season.
He has had the 11th-most goal attempts in Serie A yet still finished as the second-best goalscorer in the league. Adding to that, Lukaku has excellent supportive players around him in the Belgian national squad who can feed him the ball – Kevin De Bruyne and Dries Mertens.
Lukaku has 59 goals in 91 appearances for his nation. That includes 58 goals in the last 59 outings. Everything considered you could argue Lukaku should be the top favourite to win EURO 2020 Golden Boot.
Prediction: Romelu Lukaku Top Goalscorer – 2 units – 8.00 at Bet365
Kylian Mbappe-Lottin – France
Odds: 10.0
Ligue 1 top scorer (27 goals) and a French national, Kylian Mbappe-Lottin checks all the marks for a potential EURO 2020 top goalscorer. However, we have one big problem with Mbappe and his chances to shine – France have way too much talent (particularly in the attack) for us to confidently say that Mbappe will be given enough opportunities to rack up goals.
With Oliver Giroud and Karim Benzema working alongside him, it seems unlikely Mbappe will be the go-to scorer for his nation. Mbappe might be appealing to some at 10.0, but there are better picks out there.
Christiano Ronaldo
Odds: 13.00
You can’t blame anyone for liking Christiano Ronaldo on the EURO 2020 top goalscorer market. He is one of the greatest football players in history and the key player for Portugal as they chase their back-to-back EURO title.
As the reigning champions, Portugal shouldn’t be overlooked this year for two big reasons – Fernando Santos in combination with what is arguably the strongest team the Iberian nation has had in years. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Navigators are priced at 10.00 to repeat their success from 2016.
Ronaldo enters EURO 2020 with 42 goals in 40 appearances since last EURO, yet is still priced as high as 13.00 to end the tournament as the top goalscorer. He could definitely achieve that, assuming Portugal make it out of the groups and into the semi-finals.
Memphis Depay
Odds: 17.00
Depay looks like a good pick at 17.00, and there are many reasons why we believe that’s the case. He has 26 goals in 48 appearances for his club and country this season and is Netherland’s main man in front.
While we can’t know for sure how far the Netherlands will go in this tournament, there seems to be a high chance that they’ll make out of their group relatively unharmed. The Dutch are in a group of Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia, and if the bookmakers were correct when setting the odds and the Oranje come out first, they shouldn’t be facing a tough opponent until at least the semi-finals.
Depay’s side chances to succeed are that much higher if we consider that the Dutch are playing all of their three group games at home in Amsterdam, which can only help the team and Depay shine.
Depay finished 2020/21 Ligue 1 season with 20 goals (seven fewer than Mbappe) but has netted nine goals in his last 10 appearances, suggesting he has found his goalscoring form just in time. Depay has also added six goals in eight qualifying matches while contributing eight assists.
He has proven how valuable he is for his side, and we can be sure Frank de Boer has taken notes of that.
Prediction: Memphis Depay Top Goalscorer E/W – 0.5 units – 17.00 at Bet365
Karim Benzema – France
Odds: 19.00
Karim Benzema’s return to the Les Bleus might as well become a national holiday. After six long years watching his nation compete in international tournaments, the prolific Real Madrid goalscorer has been recalled by Didier Deschamps to join the 26-man lineup, and that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Benzema was phenomenal in LaLiga (22 goals), leading Real Madrid to a somewhat bittersweet second-place finish. Since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, Benzema took over the role as Real Madrid’s key man, and he lived up to the expectations several times over.
Since taking over the role as the go-to man at the Galacticos, Benzema has scored 88 goals, which averages out at one every 135 minutes, and you can be sure he’ll look as deadly as ever at EURO 2020 with Mbappe by his side.
Burak Yilmaz
Odds: 41.00
Burak Yilmaz has had a season to remember. He was signed by Lille as a free agent after and has quickly established himself as a start player in Ligue 1, leading the charge for Lille to upset the league and break Paris Saint-Germain F.C.’s streak of three consecutive domestic league titles.
The Turkish veteran notched 18 goals for Lille in just 23 appearances. He hasn’t disappointed in Turkey’s qualifiers either, with his highlight being a hat-trick against the Netherlands.
Yilmaz is our longshot pick for EURO 2020 Top Goal Scorer. He has the composure, the experience and the ability to score from anywhere on the pitch. What’s more, Yilmaz will be the designated penalty-taker for his side.
Prediction: Burak Yilmaz Top Goalscorer E/W – 0.25 units – 41.00 at Bet365
