FC Tokyo vs Yokohama F. Marinos
When: Saturday, May 1 – 14:00 JST
Where: Ajinomoto Stadium in Chofu, Tokyo, Japan
Weather: Clouds, 23°C
FC Tokyo don’t look too sharp heading into this match. They’re 0-3 across their last three J-League outings. On a more positive note, Tokyo beat Oita Trinita (1-0) and drew with Tokushima (1-1) at the YBC Levian Cup.
Unlike Tokyo, Yokohama F. Marinos are unbeaten in their last 13 fixtures across all competitions, with nine wins to go along with it. Away games haven’t been Yokohama F. Marinos’s strongest suit, however, having managed only seven points in four travels.
Will Yokohama F. Marinos continue their unbeaten streak this weekend, or will the hosts rise from the ashes and deliver in front of the home crowd?
FC Tokyo at Their Best When Playing at Home
FC Tokyo might not have looked too sharp of late, but they’re 4-0-3 at home and 3-2 in their last five. That run includes three back-to-back victories against Shonan Bellmare (3-2), Vegalta Sendai (2-1), and Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo (2-1), as well as two back-to-back losses against Kawasaki Frontale (2-4) and Sagan Tosu (1-2).
At Ajinomoto Stadium, FC Tokyo scored 15 goals and conceded 15 in seven outings. That’s obviously not ideal, but at least they’re scoring goals.
FC Tokyo have scored at least one goal in all of their home games, which includes two against the current frontrunners Kawasaki Frontale and one against the best defensive team in the league – Sagan Tosu.
Even though FC Tokyo aren’t good enough to compete for the title, you have to respect their ability to score goals. Their best scorer, Diego Olivera has five to his name in 11 games, followed by Tagawa Kyosuke and Morishige Masato with three apiece.
Yokohama F. Marinos in Hot Form
Yokohama F. Marinos have been just phenomenal of late. After a slow start of the season, when they lost to Yokohama FC (1-3) and Kawasaki Frontale (0-2), Yokohama F. Marinos found their stride and never looked back.
They’re undefeated in their last 13 fixtures across all competitions, having drawn only four games in that stretch. They enter this match off a 5-2 win against Vegalta Sendai in the YBC Levian Cup, having previously trashed Yokohama FC 5-0 in the J-League fixture.
Yokohama F. Marinos are 6-3-1 on the season with 21 points, which is good for a fourth-place on the ladder. They’re only two points short of Sagan Tosu in third, with two more games in hand.
What’s perhaps even more impressive is Yokohama F. Marinos’ GD. They have scored 20 goals and conceded only eight. While Yokohama F. Marinos’ scoring is still firm, they have conceded twice against Vegalta Sendai last time out and once against Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo.
FC Tokyo vs Yokohama F. Marinos Betting Picks
Although it’s very clear which of the two should be the favourite to win, it’s the fact that both sides know how to score goals that should make this bout a bit more exciting.
FC Tokyo have scored in all of their seven home games this season, while Yokohama F. Marinos managed three or more goals in three out of their last five away games.
Looking back at the head-to-head meeting between these sides – we have seen at least four goals in their last four clashes. They last met in October 2020, when Yokohama F. Marinos won 4-0, however, it was FC Tokyo who won in 2019 with 4-2.
Everything points towards a high-scoring affair, that won’t leave any soccer fan indifferent. While FC Tokyo should be able to score at least one, it’s Yokohama F. Marinos who are able to score at least three on their own.
Prediction: Over 3.00 goals
