Tonight we are travelling to France, where the 1/8 finals of the Coupe de France will take place at Stade du Roudourou in Guingamp, where Guingamp face off against Lyon in hopes to win their 3rd Cup in their history.
Guingamp, as mentioned, won the Coupe de France twice in the history of the competition. The first time Guingamp won the Cup was in 2009 when they managed to do so while playing in the 2nd league. The second time Guingamp lifted the trophy was 5 years later in 2014. Their Cup win in 2014 was also the last time a team other then PSG won the tournament. This year, they advanced to the 1/8 finals after defeating Pontivyen (4:2) and Nancy (2:1), which means they will face off against the 1st tier team for the 1st time in this year’s Coup de France. In the league, Guingamp are currently sitting at the last spot with a record of 3-5-14. While they managed to win against Monaco (0:2) and Rennes (2:1), Guingamp lost to St Etienne (0:1), PSG (9:0) and most recently against Reims (0:1) looking solely at their last 5 games. The home record of Guingamp does not show a better picture, as they won only once in front of their own fans (1-3-7). While their record is not promising, they can be happy with their recent 2 wins against Rennes (2:1) and Monaco in Coupe de la Ligue (3:2), which they won after penalties.
Lyon advanced into the 1/8 finals by defeating Bourges (0:2) in 1/32 finals and Amiens in 1/16 finals (0:2). In the league Lyon is currently sitting at the 3rd spot with 43 points, only 3 short of reaching 2nd placed Lille and 13 points behind the league leaders PSG. As of now, they are on a hot run, winning their last 4 games in a row in all competitions. Most noticeably they won against PSG (2:1) on February 3rd, which was the first defeat PSG suffered this season. With 4 consecutive wins and 2 draws against Toulouse and Reims prior to that, Lyon are undefeated in the last 6 games.
Historically, Lyon are a better side, winning the last 3 encounters against Guingamp with an aggregate score of 4:7. With an impressive run of Lyon in recent games and a poor performance from Guingamp throughout this season, I believe we will be looking at yet another win for Lyon tonight, as they face the worst team in the league. The last time these two sides met was on November 10th 2018 in the league match, when Lyon won 2:4. From what we have seen from the teams we will most likely look at similar performances and ultimately a similar result. With Lyon’s recent win over PSG, their morale is high and that will surely translate in their next fixture against Guingamp. Still, Guingamp are not as weak as you might expect from a bottom team league. They should arguably be positioned higher up the league, however, Lyon just might prove to be a superior team tonight. Expect a dominant performance from Lyon.
