In today’s match, we will see Guingamp hosting Rennes at Stade du Roudourou in hopes to bounce back after a defeat against St. Etienne with another home match.
Guingamp has only won 2 league games this season, with their most recent win coming from a match against Monaco on 22th of December. Since then, Guingamp has managed to win 2 games in the Cup competition, against Pontivyen (2:4) and Paris SG (1:2) on 9th of January. I have already talked about the win against PSG, which is an impressive one on the paper, however as said, PSG were severely underperforming and deservingly got knocked out by Guingamp. As for the league games, Guingamp is still in a terrible form, as they are 1-1-3 in the last 5 games. They have lost against Dijon (2:1), Amiens (1:2), St Etienne (0:1), but managed to win against Monaco (0:2) and played a draw against Nice (0:0). In their recent 5 league games, Guingamp has not been too effective in scoring goals, as they managed to score 4 while conceding 5. Their biggest problem is that they usually manage to produce plenty of goal attempts, but when it comes to converting them into a goal.. well there are not as many as they would have hoped. Their best striker, Marcus Thuram has scored 7 goals this season, which is basically half of all the goals Guingamp managed to score in 19 games played, however, he scored only 1 in the last 5 league games. On the other side, they conceded far too many goals (35) which is the most in the league, with only 2 other teams conceding more than 30 goals up until now.
Rennes are travelling to Guingamp to face off against the bottom team, which should spell easy 3 points. As of now, Rennes is on a 4 game winning streak, which helped them climb to the 7th spot in the league. They were however defeated by Monaco in the Cup game (2:1) after penalties, which was far from impressive. Nonetheless, they bounced back with a 0:1 win against Nantes on 13th of January. In their last 5 games, Rennes scored 10 goals whilst conceding only 4. With a 4-0-1 record, they are currently in the best form in the league, even passing PSG, who have drawn 2 games in the last 5. In the match against Nantes, Rennes were not performing as well as they would have hoped, in fact, they played poorly. They held a 42% ball possession, had only 6 goal attempts any 1 shot on goal, while Nantes had a 58% ball possession, 24 goal attempts and 3 shots on goal. Despite having only 1 shot on goal, Rennes managed to convert it with 100% success rate, which was surprisingly enough for them to win. With a poor performance like that, Rennes needs to improve and perform better against Guingamp as they can not afford to lose any more points if they wish to end up in the top half of the league.
Rennes is coming into this match with a poor performance behind them, which still somehow was enough for a win, but another showing like that tonight would most likely see them kneeling down to Guingamp, just like they did last season when they lost 0:1. Guingamp will be enjoying a home advantage tonight, but to be fair the so-called “home advantage” did not prove to be an advantage for them, as they have not yet won a match in front of their own fans (0-3-6). On the other side, Rennes are 4th best away team with an overall record of 4-3-3 and have not tasted a defeat in away league games since 26th of September, when they were defeated by Amiens (2:1). Odds on Rennes are quite high, which is not surprising due to their recent performance against Nimes and Monaco, however, Rennes is a better side and will not repeat the mistake for the 3rd time and give their opponents a chance to win, especially when playing against Guingamp. Expect Rennes to perform up to par and grab another 3 points.
Prediction: Rennes +0.00 Asian Handicap
