Leeds vs Liverpool
When: Monday, April 19 – 20:00 GMT
Where: Elland Road in Leeds, UK
Weather: Mostly sunny, 15°C
Referee: Anthony Taylor
Tonight, Leeds are hoping to do to Liverpool the same they did to Manchester City in the previous round. As a reminder, Leeds beat the Premier League leaders 2-1 at the Etihad, despite playing with 10 men for most of the game.
That’s something Liverpool was not able to do this season. The Reds played 1-1 against the league’s leaders in Manchester but lost 1-4 at home.
What Marcelo Bielsa and his team haven’t been able to do is beat Liverpool. At least, not yet. In the only game they played this season, the Reds were the ones to walk away with three points. Still, it was far from easy, as evident from the fact that the final score was 4-3.
Leeds Turning Into Premier League’s Giant-Slayers
In the previous round, Leeds beat the EPL champions-elect Manchester City. Sure, it’s surprising to see Pep Guardiola’s team losing, but it’s not too much of a surprise that they lost to Leeds.
“He is probably the person I admire the most in world football,” – that’s what City boss said about the Leeds manager Bielsa.
Guardiola, however, is not the only admirer of Bielsa. In fact, in the world of football managers, the 65-year-old Argentine is considered the top mastermind.
The big reason for that is that even when in charge of weaker sides, Bielsa has somehow been able to slay some real footballing giants. This season, we saw his team winning at least a point against teams like Manchester City, Leicester, Everton, Arsenal, and so on.
Bielsa’s team is still without a point won against Liverpool; maybe it’s time for it to happen?
Liverpool Chasing That Champions League Spot
Football’s favourite villain Bielsa is setting up a trap for Jurgen Klopp’s boys. The last time he almost got them – in the first round of the 2020/21 season, Leeds had a point in their hands until 88′ when Salah scored the winner for Liverpool.
However, a lot has changed since Game Week 1. Liverpool entered the season as the #1 favourites to retain the EPL title, but that dream is now over. The Reds have 22 points fewer than the table leaders, and with only seven games left to play, they stand no chance of climbing to the top.
They do still have a chance for a top-four finish, which would book them a ticket to the next season’s Champions League. Not only is the #4 place within the reach, but they also stand a reasonably good chance to finish the season inside the top-three.
Of course, that’s only possible if they keep on winning. The Reds are currently enjoying a streak of three straight wins – against Wolves, Arsenal, and Aston Villa.
The issue is that they still have injury problems, especially in the back. Van Dijk has returned to practice, but will not get back in the squad any time soon. Gomez also remains sidelined, as well as Matip.
In addition to injured defenders, Liverpool’s captain, midfielder Jordan Henderson is also out, and so is Divock Origi, a forward.
Leeds vs Liverpool Betting Picks
Both teams have been playing really well as of late. Liverpool need to continue doing that if they wish to keep their Champions League dreams alive. Oddsmakers think the Reds should be able to do so. However, we beg to differ.
One thing that bookmakers have seemingly forgotten is is that Leeds have Marcelo Bielsa, who just loves taking down the top dogs.
In the previous clash between the two, we saw a total of seven goals. Something similar should happen tonight as well, but this time, we might see Leeds exiting the pitch as the happier side.
Prediction: Leeds to win
