Luton vs Rotherham
When: Tuesday, May 4 – 19:15 GMT
Where: Kenilworth Road in Luton, England
Weather: Showers, 10°C
Referee: David Webb
There are only two games left to be played for these two teams until the end of the season. For Luton, it doesn’t matter much what happens in those matches – they will finish the season in mid-table no matter what.
It’s a whole different story for Rotherham. This team is currently in the relegation zone, but they still have a (decent) chance to get away from there. They’re just three points behind Derby, the closest team in the safe zone.
Knowing that Derby have played a game more, Rotherham would catch up with them with a win tonight. If Derby and Rotherham remain tied at the end of the season, Rotherham would finish higher thanks to a better score difference.
Luton Up Their Form, But It’s Already Too Late
This team has been playing very well in the last couple of weeks. In fact, they’re without a loss since April 5, with three wins and two draws in the past five matches.
Still, it seems that they’ve started playing good football a bit too late. The season is almost over, so there’s no chance for Luton to cash in on their good run. They’re currently in the #12 place and will probably stay there until the end.
Even if they managed to win the remaining two games of the season, they won’t move much higher in the rankings. In fact, the highest they can get is the #8 place, which is still two spots below the playoff positions.
For this reason, Luton probably aren’t going to be too fired up for tonight’s game. Actually, their manager Nathan Jones might decide to give some of the younger players a chance in the remaining fixtures.
He did something similar in the game with Middlesbrough in the previous round, when he let some less experienced players on the pitch.
Another reason why we might see some not-too-familiar faces wearing Luton shirts is that this team’s been having big injury problems. Tom Lockyer, Eunan O’Kane, Tom Ince, and Danny Hylton, all remain sidelined, while Luke Berry is labeled questionable.
A Must-Win Game for Rotherham
The final round of the English Championship in the 2020-21 season will take place on Saturday. That’s when we will find out which teams will get relegated.
Things are really complicated as four teams are in danger of dropping. Three of them will have to pack their bags and move to League One.
What this means is that only one of those four will stay in the Championship for another season.
The teams in question are Derby, with 43 points, and Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday, and Wycombe, all with 40 points.
Rotherham are in the best position of all those teams because they’ve played a game less. So, with a win tonight, they would escape the relegation zone.
However, a win over Luton probably wouldn’t mean that their job is done. Instead, they will likely need to win in the final round as well. Nevertheless, a win tonight would mean that their destiny is entirely in their hands.
The issue is that beating Luton is not going to be easy. Actually, Rotherham haven’t done so since 2009. On a more positive note, Rotherham’s squad is almost 100% injury-free.
Angus MacDonald and Ben Wiles are the only two players who will definitely miss the match, but Rotherham should be able to cope without them.
More good news is that midfielder Matt Crooks is back. Crooks, who is their third-most prolific scorer this season with seven goals, was out for three straight games due to a red card suspension.
Luton vs Rotherham Betting Picks
If they’re playing with their best XI, Luton would be favorites against Rotherham. However, it’s very likely their boss will go for a less experienced squad, the reason being that Luton have nothing left to fight for.
Rotherham, on the other hand, are fighting for survival. They need to win to get away from the relegation zone, although even a draw would not be the end of the world. Losing the Luton vs Rotherham game, however, could mean serious problems for this team.
