Tonight, Lyon will host Rennes at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, in hopes to continue their run of no losses since 7th October, when they got defeated by Paris SG (5:0).
Lyon is coming into this match after a 2:2 draw against Lille, which was their 2nd drawn match in the last 5, with the other 3 ending in a win. Lyon is currently 4th in the league with an overall record of 8-4-3, however, they are the 2nd best in-form team in the league 6-3-1 in the past 10 games. At home, Lyon is the 5th best team in the league with an overall record of 5-2-1. Looking at their most recent match against Lile, Lyon did not experience the best start of the match. Lile scored the opener in the 17th minute, to which they added another goal only 11 minutes later. At this point, Lyon was 2 goals behind and started pushing for a goal themselves. Although Lyon had a 71% possession and 10 goal attempts they did not manage to score a goal in the 1st half. The second half was similar to the 1st one, with Lyon dominating the possession (73%) and in goal attempts (8). Only 3 minutes into the 2nd half, Lyon had a chance to score a goal from a penalty kick, but Depay missed it, which kept the score untouched. This, however, did not faze Lyon, as they continued to push for a goal and they finally got it in 63′. Their 2nd goal came only 4 minutes before the 90′ when Dembele scored his 4th goal this season and levelled the match at 2:2. The final score was far from what should have happened. Lyon was a dominant force in that fixture, however, they seemingly needed to concede 2 goals before waking up.
Rennes is currently 14th in the league with a 4-5-6 record. In their recent 5 games, Rennes only won once against Caen (1:2), draw 2 games and lost 2. Their biggest problem is conceding too many goals; 10 goals in 5 games. With that poor record, they are the 2nd worst team in the league looking at the last 5 matches. In their last match, Rennes suffered a high defeat against Strasbourg (1:4). The opener was scored by Rennes in the 9th minute, however, they did not hold on to the lead for long. Strasbourg answered with an equalizer in the 20th minute, to which they added another goal only 12 minutes later from a penalty. Statistics wise, It was Strasbough who dominated with 7 goal attempts out of which 5 were shot towards the goal, Rennes, on the other hand, had 5 goal attempts and only 1 shot on goal. The second half was quite the same in that regard, however, it was Strasbourg who scored 2 more goals out of 3 shots on goal they had. Rennes had only 1 shot on goal in the 2nd half, which was not successful. Final score: 1:4.
Last time these two teams met, it was Rennes who celebrated a win (0:2), however, I do not believe that will be the case today. Rennes is not defending their goal good enough to stop Lyon offence. With 10 goals conceded in the past 5 matches, this is should be a serious concern for them, when going against a team that has scored 10 goals in the same amount of matches.
