Melbourne City and Perth Glory will lock horns on Saturday, November 5, at AAMI Park for the first time since May, when Perth Glory picked up their first victory (3-1) since January 2021. But can the visitors emulate that success? Let’s find out.

Melbourne City – Unbeaten (Yet)

Melbourne City head into the fifth round of 2022/23 A-League as the current league leaders. They’ve yet to lose a match this season and currently share the top spot with WS Wanderers, albeit with a better goal difference, having scored eight goals and conceded just one.

Notably, Melbourne City conceded two goals last week when they played a draw against resilient Wellington Phoenix (2-2). Despite winning a point, was quite an underwhelming match for the City, who held a 2-0 lead at the 34-minute mark. However, they let their foot off the gas in the final minutes of the game and conceded two goals in 79’ and 90’.

Melbourne City showed some cracks in that match, but we wouldn’t overreact to it. They were the better team, and had City not felt too content with how the match went until the final 20 minutes; the final result would look much different.

Perth Glory – In Great Form

Perth Glory head to AAMI Park in superb form, having won three of their last five clashes against the hosts. Moreover, Perth Glory scored at least two goals in all their last three head-to-head victories.

Still, while the Glory have a solid head-to-head record, they’ve managed just one win (1-0-3) this season, when they beat Central Coast Mariners (1-2). Unfortunately, Perth Glory have been far less successful in their remaining three outings, having lost all three – against WS Wanderers (0-1), Newcastle Jets (1-2), and Adelaide United, who bested them 2-1 last week.

In the match against Adelaide United, Perth Glory had their chances, but they were clearly the second-best team on the day. Throughout the 90 minutes, the Glory have produced just nine shots, only one-third of which went towards the goal.

Poor short conversion is a trend for Perth Glory, who had a poor offensive display in all of their three losses. And unless they find a way to be a bit more effective with the ball, Perth Glory will have a difficult time bouncing back from a 1-3 start to the season.

Melbourne City are priced as 1.36 favourites (1.37 Pinnacle) for this match, Perth Glory as 8.50 underdogs (8.43 Pinnacle), while a draw is priced at 5.00 (5.38 Pinnacle).

There wasn’t much price movement since the market opened, with City opening as 1.41 favourites. But we saw Perth Glory’s odds move quite a bit, as they opened as 7.14 underdogs.

This should be an exciting affair, but while Perth Glory has proven to be very resilient, it’s tough to doubt Melbourne City. Their showing last week has left a lot to be desired and does beg the question of whether City really deserves to be priced as 1.36 favourites.

But had they held onto the 2-0 lead and not choked in the final 20 minutes, we would not doubt City’s chances to come out on top of this affair.
