The 2018 A-League Grand Final rivals will lock horns once more on Friday in a must-watch match between two squads who never fail to produce an exciting affair.
Melbourne Victory – Underwhelming Start
Melbourne Victory have had a very underwhelming start to the 2022/23 A-League season, with just one victory from their five outings. Victory’s only win came in the season’s opening round against Sydney FC (3-2), but they were since unable to emulate that success.
Across the next three outings, VIctory suffered back-to-back losses against WS Wanderers (0-1) and Melbourne City (0-2) but bounced back a bit with a 0-0 draw against Brisbane Roar. Yet, even though Melbourne Victory pocketed a point, their latest outing was yet another of many disappointing showings.
Despite having an extra man on the pitch since the 35th minute, Melbourne Victory failed to produce anything. They shot the ball 29 times, but only two shots went towards the goal, which is a stunningly poor figure, to say the least. So even though a point is still a point, Melbourne Victory have a lot more to prove.
Newcastle Jets – Slowing Down
Newcastle Jets enjoyed a strong start to the season, winning their opening two outings against Perth Glory (2-1) and Wellington Phoenix (3-1). Unfortunately, the Jets were far less efficient last week when they kneeled down to WS Wanderers (0-2) at CommBank Stadium.
It was a somewhat expected and well-deserved loss for the Jets, who didn’t show much. Much like Melbourne Victory, the Jets were very inefficient with the ball, with just four shots (two on goal) throughout the 90 minutes.
That’s not to say that the Jets have produced many shots in their previous matches, but such a poor offensive display should leave you wondering what the Jets can do at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Friday.
Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets Betting Odds
Melbourne Victory are priced as 1.75 favourites (1.80 Pinnacle) for this bout, Newcastle Jets as 4.33 (4.46 Pinnacle) underdogs, while a draw is priced at 3.80 (4.00 PInnacle).
The offered A-League odds on this match have changed quite a bit since the market opened. The hosts were initially priced as 1.64 favourites, while the Jets were 5.03 underdogs.
Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets A-League Betting Picks
Based on what we’ve seen from Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets lately, it’s tough to pick a side. Melbourne Victory have been highly underwhelming this season and have yet to produce anything noteworthy.
Meanwhile, the Jets have won their opening two games yet were highly disappointing last week. Still, it’s not like the Jets have looked phenomenal in their wins, so their round-four loss hardly changed our opinion of them.
Since 2020, Victory and the Jets have met five times and head into this bout with a 2-1-2 H2H record. Interestingly, their last three meetings have ended in 2-1 results, with Victory picking up two wins.
This should be a fine match to watch, and while there doesn’t seem to be a clear favourite, the desperate need for points and the home-ground advantage should be enough for Victory to keep all three points in Melbourne.
- Prediction: Melbourne Victory to win
