Minnesota United v LA Galaxy – MLS Betting Preview and Prediction

Minnesota United and La Galaxy have proven their worth this season and earned a spot in the playoffs. That said, the real test starts on Monday, October 21, when they will be put in a do-or-die position, as they clash in a one-leg match at Allianz Field, meaning that for one team, their 2019 season ends here.

LA Galaxy limping into the playoffs

LA Galaxy finished their season with two consecutive defeats, which cost them greatly. Had they won against either Vancouver Whitecaps (3:4) or Houston Dynamo (4:2), LA Galaxy would be the one hosting the playoffs match at this stage. But they didn’t and they won’t. Overall, Galaxy played well and deserved a spot in the playoffs, however, we have one slight concern about the team, and that is their defence. Galaxy conceded 59 goals throughout the season, which, bear in mind, is third-most in the league and the most out of all playoffs teams. Fortunately for them, they have a very strong attack which can compensate for their leaky defence. However, we can’t help but wonder how far their attack can carry them. Looking back at Galaxy’s last five fixtures, they impressed with scoring 16 goals. That said, they also conceded 12, which is by no means something we can praise them for. Furthermore, it’s worth noting Galaxy conceded three goals or more in four out of their last eight games.

Considering their defensive issues have been persistent throughout the season, we can’t expect them to suddenly improve in that aspect and impress with a rock-solid defence in the playoffs. That ultimately means Galaxy’s success will heavily rely on how strong their attack can perform and how well can it compensate for their defensive woes.

Minnesota United looking for a W in front of home fans

Unlike LA Galaxy, who struggle to perform defensively, the “Loons” proved to be one of the best defensive teams, that is at least when they play at home. We must give Minnesota some credit for their improvement compared to last season, and it’s easy to see Ike Opara played a huge role in Minnesota United’s improvement. He proved to be a driving force in Minnesota’s defence, which conceded only 43 goals throughout the season. What is even more impressive, is that United conceded only 13 at Allianz Field, which makes them the most efficient defensive team in the West and they will hope their solid defence will carry them into the next stage here.

Looking back at Minnesota United’s last fixture of the regular season, they defeated SKC (2:1), drew with LAFC (1:1) and most recently lost to Seattle Sounders in an away game (1:0). Overall, most of Minnesota’s success came from their home games, where they earned a 10-6-1 record, which is understandably far better compared to their 5-2-10 away record.

Verdict & Prediction

As far as defensive performance is concerned, the two sides enjoyed a completely opposite experience this season. The main issue in Galaxy’s defence seems to be their overly-aggressive approach, which leaves them open for counterattacks and we believe that will be something Minnesota will look to exploit here. Zlatan Ibrahimović and his men seem to play all of their games with the mentality “all or nothing”, which makes their fixtures highly entertaining to watch, seeing how there are always goals on display. At this points it’s worth noting, all last 10 fixtures LA Galaxy participated in saw at least three goals, with 5/10 seeing at least four. All in all, Galaxy are a team who can be unpredictable with their result, mostly because of the previously mentioned approach to their games. On a good day they can put up a breath-taking performance and defeat anyone, however, at this point we must ask ourselves; will Monday be that day? All things considered, we expect to see goals at Allianz Field, despite Minnesota solid home defence. LA Galaxy have proven time and time again they can score goals just as easy as they can concede them, suggesting this one can easily end with at least three goals on display.
