Monaco are in a great position going into this game. They’re top of Group E with 8 points, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen (6 points) and Tottenham (4 points). A draw would be enough for Monaco to qualify for the knockout phase but they are more likely to play to win for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that Monaco will try to top the group so a win would be handy. And the second reason is they have formidable scoring stats that show attack is their most sensible approach. They have averaged 2.5 goals a game in 21 games in all competitions this season and have scored 15 times in their last three home fixtures. Monaco are also at full strength. They have a settled starting eleven in a preferred 4-4-2 formation and all their best players are all available. In summary, Monaco have plenty of points going in their favour heading into the match.
Tottenham have left Alderweireld, Lamela and Davies behind, with all three injured, the former being the most notable absentee who leaves them defensively weaker. Pochettino will send out his strongest line-up for this must win contest, with Alli and Heung-Min Son expected to return to the team in a bid to provide greater attacking threat, pushing Kane into a centre forward role. It’s not a game they can afford to lose and though they’ll be slight underdogs, they will have to play positively, as a draw doesn’t suit. Pochettino has spoken of being careful and not reckless, sticking to the game plan, but if they concede first the plan goes out the window and they’ll have to attack freely. Any win suits, so from the outset they’ll be balanced to avoid going behind. They have the personnel to hurt Monaco, particularly with Kane up front, but they have struggled on the European stage so far and won’t face an easy opponent. The opening goal is essential as it gives Tottenham something to hold onto. Defeat sees them eliminated so there’s plenty of pressure to get all three points, but if they need to chase the game their task is a lot harder.
Verdict
The mood in the Monaco camp will be excellent. They have played some tremendous football in recent weeks and there are no problems to report on or off the pitch. Everybody will be focused and highly motivated ahead of another important European game. A must bet on the home team!
