New York Giants v Philadelphia Eagles – NFL Betting Preview and Prediction
This betting preview will focus on the bout between New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, which will take place this Sunday at MetLife Stadium. It will mark the second and last time these two sides will meet, having previously clashed on December 10, when Eagles won 23-17 after overtime.
Weather: Intermittent clouds, 5C
Alex Kemp will take over as the main referee this fixture and it will mark his 15th match in charge in 2019/20 season. He has previously been involved in Cleveland Browns versus Baltimore Ravens. In total he called out 201 penalties this season with 1673 yds, meaning he averages 14.36 penalties per game and 119.50 penalty yards per game.
Eagles desperate for a win
Philadelphia Eagles took over the NFC East Division last week, when they defeated (17-9) Dallas Cowboys and will now look to finish the job and clinch the Division title with a win against the Giants.
If they lose, however, and if heavily-favorited Dallas Cowboys defeat Washington Redskins, Eagles would drop down to the second spot and hand Dallas their ticket to represent the NFC East. Suffice to say anything less than a win won’t be acceptable for Eagles, which will not only inspire urgency but also pot immense pressure on Dough Pederson’s men.
As it stands now, Eagles are 8-0-7 on the year and are entering this bout with a three-game winning streak in their hands. They have previously defeated New York Giants (23:17)(OT), Washington Redskins (37:27) and as mentioned Cowboys (17:9). Prior to that, however, Eagles lost to Miami Dolphins (31:37), Seattle Seahawks (9:17) and New England Patriots (10:17).
While it’s clear Eagles are in decent shape, it’s their injury list that worries us. Injuries have been the biggest issue with this team throughout the year and things aren’t looking up ahead of their clash with Giants either.
Talking about injuries, Eagles might miss Zach Ertz who has been their key weapon this season and even if he does play, he surely won’t be 100% ready. It goes without saying that it will be a massive blow to Eagles that relied heavily on him for a while now as the main outlet of Carson Wentz.
Out: WR Nelson Agholor, TE Zach Ertz
Questionable: T Lane Johnson, CB Jalen Mills
New York Giants with nothing to lose
No matter how this game ends, New York Giants will finish the season at third place in NFC Division, meaning they will enter this bout with nothing to lose and we expect them to play like that.
It’s sad to see Giants go down like that, especially considering they have improved in the last several weeks where they have shown they do have the quality and the dynamic to compete with the best.
In their last five, Giants lost to Chicago Bears (14:19), Green Bay Packers (13:31), Philadelphia Eagles (17:23)(OT), but won their most recent two against Miami Dolphins (36:20) and Washington Redskins (41:35)(OT).
What we like in Giants is their solid defensive line, which should cause some issues for their opponents and for that reason there is a serious chance they just might make something happen. Those might be strong claims to make, but we can’t forget Eagles will miss Ertz which will severely weaken their attack.
In their last five defeats against Eagles, Giants also managed to keep the margin to no more than five points, with the sole exception being their clash in October 2018, when Eagles won 34:13, which leads us to believe Giants match up nicely with Eagles.
Out: OT Mike Remmers, TE Scott Simonson
Questionable: B Corey Ballentine, LB Alec Ogletree, CB Sam Beal
Verdict & Prediction
As we see it, without Ertz, Eagles will struggle to shine in the offense, as they will lack receiving threats and their makeshift run will have a tough time penetrating Giant’s defense.
While Eagles had a few matches throughout the season where their offense impressed, those were more an exception than a rule and we believe they are significantly weaker in the offense to what they may lead us to believe.
Another thing we believe will work against Eagles here is knowing they must win, considering Dallas are more or less guaranteed to defeat Redskins, which would put them ahead of Eagles due to a better record in the division. Pressure sometimes inspire teams to play better, but we have our doubts Eagles are built to withstand such pressure.
Philadelphia Eagles have defeated New York Giants in four out of their last five meetings at MetLife Stadium, however, if we take everything into consideration, there is a serious chance Giants can upset Eagles and avenge their defeat from the start of the month.
