Perth Wildcats v Illawarra Hawks – NBL Betting Preview and Prediction

Perth Wildcats and Illawarra Hawks will meet this Friday, October 11 at RAC Arena for their second fixture of the 2019/20 NBL season. Perth will hope they can continue with the tempo they have set in game one, whereas Hawks enter the fixture with the opposite intentions, seeing how they suffered a painful defeat against Brisbane Bullets on Sunday.

Perth edged past Melbourne in a close contest

Terrico White is the name that will resonate in the heads of both Melbourne United and Perth seeing how he was the man who scored the game-winning three for Perth with just under 12 seconds left on the clock. It truly was an exciting fixture which produced many highlights throughout the match, topped off with a spectacular shot from White.

As the score suggests (94:93), the fixture between Perth and Melbourne United was a close contest from the first minute. In the first quarter, Perth and United parted ways with 27:28 on the scoreboard, meaning Melbourne grabbed the minimal lead before they entered the second quarter. There the visitors pushed further and earned an additional five-point lead (21:26) by the time the first half ended. Holding onto a 54:48 lead, Melbourne were well on their way to muster up an upset win, however, they started to lose steam in the third where they got outscored by Perth 22:20. Nonetheless, Melbourne were still four points ahead, meaning they just needed to hold on for the final quarter, but even that proved to be too hard of a task. Perth Wildcats went into overdrive and in their own fashion outplayed Melbourne 24:19 to clinch the first W of the season and will now look to add another W this Friday.

The top scorer of the fixture was Trimble with 25 points, to which he added 8 rebounds and five assists, followed by three Perth players in Cotton (21 points), White (20 points) and Kay (18 points). Cotton also contributed three rebounds and four assists, White added one rebound and two assists, whereas Kay ended the match with incredible eight rebounds and seven assists.

Illawarra Hawks counting on Ball to deliver once more

Illawarra Hawks ended their opening fixture of the season with an underwhelming 81:90 defeat against Brisbane Bullets, in a match which could easily end the other way around if Perth had managed to be more their consistent with their performance. But they weren’t.

Match started off with a closely contested and exciting first quarter, where Hawks ended one point behind Bullets (26:27). Second-quarter continued in a similar fashion with nothing to separate the two sides who ended Q2 21-all.  Entering the second half the scoreboard showed 47:48 meaning the match was still wide open for both sides to win. But that soon changed. Illawarra Hawks seemingly ran out of steam in Q3, where they got completely outplayed by Brisbane Bullets on both ends of the court. A solid performance in the attack on top of strong defensive effort earned Bullets a dominant 22:14 quarter, which gave them the needed morale boost to keep Hawks contained in last quarter (20:20) and win the match.

The top scorer of that fixture was Patterson of Bullets with 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Behind him, we saw Brooks with 23 points, three rebounds and four assists and Sobey at third with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. The young prodigy, LaMelo Ball ended the match with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals which was an excellent way to showcase what he is all about in his debut fixture for Hawks.

Verdict & Prediction

Hawks lost their opening fixture, but they did not look all that bad. What we liked was the eruption of Ball, who is now of the main win conditions for Hawks this season, and as long as he can put up such performances, Illawarra will be a team that should not be underestimated. That being said, they will need much more than one young start to carry them through this season. As far as this match is concerned, we like Perth much more. Illawarra might have some shown signs of greatness, however, if we draw a line, Perth are far superior team and should not have a hard time dismantling Hawks on the home court.

Prediction: Perth -7.50 Points
