The shaky Philadelphia Union will clash with the New England Revolution in their fourth match of the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The match will play out at Subaru Park, where Union won four of the last five meetings with Revolution but lost the most recent one in November 2020.
Philadelphia Union vs New England Revolution
When: Wednesday, May 12 – 17:30 EDT
Where: Subaru Park in Chester, PA
Weather: Partly cloudy, 19°C
Referee: Tori Penso
Philadelphia Union sit in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference table. However, the season has only just started and there is plenty of time for them to improve their standing.
With their win against Chicago Fire in the previous round, the Union have shown glimpses of that to expect and it seems they are the right path to start climbing up the ladder. But they first need to get over their next obstacle – the second-placed New England Revolution.
Unlike Philadelphia, New England lost their most recent game. Nashville FC beat them 2-0 without any real issues.
Are Revolution in for another defeat? Judging by what we saw in the six Philadelphia Union vs New England Revolution head-to-head bouts played last year, such a scenario does seem probable.
Philadelphia Union Love Playing Against New England Revolution
In 2020, Philadelphia Union met the New England Revolution six times. The Union won four, drew one, and lost one against the Massachusetts-based team.
Union’s only loss to the New England Revolution of 2020 happened in the 1/8 final of the 2020 MLS Cup, which the Philadelphia outfit attended after finishing first in the Eastern Conference.
New England Revolution won that bout 2-0, thus knocking Philadelphia Union out of the competition. Some six months later, the PA team is looking for revenge.
Even though they started the season slowly, Philadelphia Union have more than enough talent on the squad to bounce back. They might not have any big-name players, but what they do have seem to be equally as strong as some star-studded squads.
There is no hiding that Union have yet to show much of that in 2021. They have scored only three goals in four games while allowing four in their own net. On the bright side, Philadelphia scored two against Chicago Fire in the previous round.
Sergio Santos, who was their top scorer last season, is still without a single goal to his name. The same goes for their second-best scorer of 2020, Kacper Przybylko. Obviously, the two will be very motivated to end their goal drought.
New England Revolution Flying Higher Than Expected
So far this season, the New England Revolution managed two wins, one draw, and one defeat in four games played. Their only loss came on Saturday when they proved no match for Nashville SC (0-2).
Revolution’s performance against Nashville was fairly disappointing largely due to weak showings from their attack. Despite having the ball in their possession for most of the game, Union failed to create any decent chances.
In fact, only four of their 12 attempts were aimed towards the opponent’s goal. No surprise there, as New England aren’t famous as a high-scoring team.
Looking at last season, Revolution scored a total of 26 goals from 23 regular-season games. In comparison, Philadelphia Union scored 44 in the same stretch.
Philadelphia Union vs New England Revolution Betting Picks
The Pennsylvania-based team might not have impressed in their season openers, but we are high on this team and their chances to win the MLS Cup. This squad is much stronger than what they have led us to believe thus far and they’re going to start showing that sooner or later.
Philadelphia Union should be more than capable of beating teams much tougher than New England. This is a no-brainer pick for us.
