Real Madrid vs Chelsea
When: Tuesday, April 27 – 21:00 CEST
Where: Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium in Madrid, Spain
Weather: Mostly cloudy, 18°C
Referee: Danny Makkelie (NED)
Real Madrid won the Champions League four times in the previous seven years. However, they haven’t reached the finals since 2018, when they beat Liverpool 3-1. They have a chance to do it again, but for that to happen, they need to do better than Chelsea tonight.
The first leg of that doubleheader is on the program tonight in Madrid. Los Blancos enter the game as favorites.
The first problem Real Madrid will have to deal with tonight is their long injury list. The second problem is that Chelsea are practically 100% injury-free.
Four Clean Sheets for Surging Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s captain, and one of the best defenders in the world, Sergio Ramos, is out with a muscle injury. That shouldn’t be too big of an issue, considering Real Madrid weren’t able to count on him since the start of the month.
Even before that, Ramos has had some fitness concerns. In March, he got sidelined for a shin injury, which happened right after he returned from a knee injury. He also missed a couple of weeks in the first half of the season with a thigh injury.
Still, even without one of their most influential players, Los Blancos have been doing pretty well. In fact, they’re still in the race for the LaLiga title, just two points short of Atletico Madrid who are at the top of the table.
They’ve also been impressive in the Champions League, where they knocked out Atalanta and Liverpool en route to the semi-final.
The most impressive fact of all is that Real Madrid are without a defeat in their last 17 outings games. Furthermore, they kept a clean sheet in the last four.
Can they keep their streak going? Rafael Varane is back, which certainly is going to give them a massive boost at the back. The same goes for Dani Carvajal, whom we saw starting the previous game.
Despite Good Results, Chelsea Haven’t Been Too Impressive
Chelsea achieved a lot this month – they qualified for the UCL semi-final, advanced to the final of the FA Cup after beating Manchester City, and even made it into the top four in the Premier League.
Still, it wouldn’t be an overstatement to call some of their recent performances disappointing. For example, in the UCL game against Porto in London, they lost 1-0.
In the FA Cup, Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0, albeit with only 5 goal attempts. They should count themselves lucky for winning that game, as the Sky Blues had more than twice as many attempts on goal.
Chelsea also struggled against Brighton in the Premier League, with the game at Stamford Bridge finishing 0-0.
Then, in their most recent match, Chelsea beat West Ham 1-0. Not too impressive a result, especially knowing that West Ham played with 10 men from the 81st minute to the 6th minute of the stoppage time.
Real Madrid vs Chelsea Betting Picks
Real Madrid and Chelsea met only three times in history. The most recent of their duels happened five years ago.
Real Madrid won that game 3-2 with two goals by Marcelo and one by Mariano, both of whom are still in the squad. On the side of Chelsea, only Azpilicueta is still on the team.
It’s hard to say what to expect from the “new” Chelsea. However, we have a pretty clear idea of what to expect from Real Madrid. They’re probably going to do really well at the back, keeping the opposition players far away from their goal.
Considering that Los Blancos have also been pretty decent scoring-wise, it’s reasonable to think of them as favorites.
Prediction: Real Madrid to win
