Reims v Nimes – Ligue 1 Betting Preview and Prediction
Reims and Nimes will lock horns this Saturday, October 26, at Stade Auguste-Delaune, which will mark their 11th Ligue 1 fixture of the season. The teams are bound to make sparks fly at Coronation City, as both sides desperately need points to improve their position on the standings, yet for quite the opposite reasons.
Reims looking to break into top two
Les rouges et blancs are entering round 11 sitting at the third spot in the league with a 5-2-3 record and 17 points, which sets them two points behind Nantes who are holding onto the second place. That said, Reims have one game in hand, meaning a win here would push them closer to the league leaders, PSG, who reside at the top with an 8-0-2 record and 24 points. Looking at what Reims have shown so far it’s easy to praise the French outfit for their performance, who put up some solid results so far. Guion’s men are arriving into this fixture undefeated in the last three fixtures across all competitions. At the start of October, Reims took down Rennes (0:1), drew with Lens in a friendly (1:1) two weeks ago and claimed an impressive win against Montpellier last round (1:0). With regards to that game, Reims scored a goal in the second minute and managed to protect the lead for the remaining 88, which on its own is an impressive feat.
While we talk about impressive defensive efforts, Reims conceded only four goals this season, which is league lowest. On the other side, they scored only nine, which is not really a praiseworthy achievement. But at the end of the day, they produced 17 points from it, so no complaints in that regard.
Nimes looking for a way out of the relegation zone
The visiting side will enter Saturday’s fixture as one of the worst-performing teams in the league. With 2-4-4 record thus far, Nimes produced barely 10 points, which ties them with Lyon at 18th place, meaning Nimes are sitting at the edge of the relegation zone. Looking back at their last 5 league fixtures, Nimes won against Toulouse (1:0), lost to Montpellier (1:0), lost to St. Etienne (0:1), drew with Lille (2:2) and most recently drew with Amiens (1:1). Looking solely at what their results show on the paper, the draw against Lille is a praiseworthy achievement, yet it’s hard to say Nimes really showed up on that night, but rather that Lille failed to do so. The hosts on that night missed a load of goalscoring opportunities (7/18), making us believe some luck was involved in Nimes’s side for them to secure a point. That said, their flaws quickly surfaced in the clash with Amiens, where Nimes failed to impress. The game ended in a draw due to Amiens’ 90’+5 goal, however, it would be safe to say they deserved to walk away with at least a point on that night. Nimes shot relatively poorly (3/11) and had only 37% ball possession.
Verdict & Prediction
Last season, we saw Nimes winning this fixture 0:3, which was surprising enough, considering Reims held a stronger home form compared to Nimes away form. That said, we have to take into account Reims entered that fixture missing six players on top of suffering from a bad form at the time, which saw them without a win in seven games in a row. But the tables have turned this time around. Not only are Reims performing far better this season, but Nimes are also missing a handful of players. What makes the whole ordeal for Nimes even worse is that they are missing Bernardoni (GK). There is really not a lot that will work in favor of Nimes here, who failed to impress in the last few fixtures and are arriving at Stade Auguste-Delaune severely weakened. We expect Reims to have a fairly easy time winning this one and without their starting goalkeeper, we can’t see Nimes keeping this one at a minimal margin.
