Sagan Tosu vs Tokushima
When: Saturday, May 1 – 15:00 JST
Where: Ekimae Real Estate Stadium in Tosu, Japan
Weather: Clear, 18°C
Sagan Tosu are a team that hasn’t accomplished much in their 24 years’ long history. Their biggest achievement was finishing in second place in J1 League in 2011. A decade later, they’re determined to make some noise once more.
They’re currently in third place, which is where they’d love to stay until the end of the season. However, the season has only just begun and there are plenty of games left to play.
Still, their form is impressive and they surely wish to keep it going. Considering that their next opponent is a team that hasn’t been playing very well lately, hoping to grab all three points doesn’t seem too crazy.
The team they’re facing in the next round is Tokushima Vortis, who are currently in 11th place with only 14 points. Their main goal for this season is not to get relegated back to J2 League, from where they came this season.
Sagan Tosu Keep Improving Their Game
Although the start of the month wasn’t too brilliant for Sagan Tosu, this team looked much improved of late. They won three of their previous six games, drawing one and losing two along the way.
During that stretch, Sagan Tosu beat Yokohama FC, Nagoya Grampus, and FC Tokyo. With the exception of Yokohama FC, who are the worst team in the league, Sagan Tosu’s opponents across the last couple of rounds were some real heavyweights.
Their most recent fixture against Kashina Antlers in the YBC Levan Cup ended in a 2-2 draw. They entered the game as underdogs but managed to get a draw. Even more impressively, Sagan Tosu did it after being 1-2 down at halftime.
Another reason why that game is important is that it featured a debut of Sagan Tosu two new players in action. One of those is Ismael Dunga, who’s just arrived from Vlaznia, one of the favorites to win the title of the Albanian Superliga.
The other player is Chico Ofoedu, the former player of Maccabi Tel Aviv. Both of these guys are forwards, which should give Sagan Tosu a little bit of a boost in the attack, where they haven’t been too productive (17 goals in 12 games).
Tokushima Just Want to Stay in the J1 League for Another Season
This team’s ambitions aren’t too high – their main goal for the season is to finish above the relegation zone and that’s about it.
Tokushima have arrived in the Japanese top tier from J2 League and they would hate to return there. So far, they’ve been doing okay. Tokushima are in the middle of the table, with eight points more than Gamba Osaka, the closest team from the danger zone.
Truth be told, Gamba Osaka have played five games fewer than Tokushima, so there’s a big risk that they could leapfrog them in the future. Still, this shouldn’t worry Tokushima much as there are plenty of games to be played before the end of the season.
What needs to worry them is that their recent form has been very poor. They lost three of their previous four games, despite not playing against any of the top teams.
Sagan Tosu vs Tokushima Betting Picks
Sagan Tosu are a better team than Tokushima and now with their new attackers, they should be able to win the game comfortably.
Prediction: Sagan Tosu -0.25 Asian Handicap
