Sampdoria vs AS Roma Preview

When: Sunday, May 2 – 20:45 CEST
Where: Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, Italy
Weather: Partly cloudy, 15°C
Referee: Juan Luca Sacchi

AS Roma take a trip to Genoa after a heavy loss to Manchester United in the Europa League last Thursday. They got hammered 2-6, which has put an end to their continental ambitions. Instead, they now want to focus entirely on the Italian Serie A.

Their form in the domestic league has been poor, with only one point in the previous three rounds. The good news for AS Roma fans is that Sampdoria haven’t been playing great either.

Another thing going in AS Roma’s favor is that they have a really good history in duels with Sampdoria. In fact, they haven’t lost to the Genoa outfit since January 2018.

Sampdoria’s Key Men Return to the Squad

Sampdoria are flying high in Serie A at the moment, even though their chances of grabbing a European spot are very slim. Nevertheless, if they can finish the season in the top half, they should be satisfied.

Although they’re currently in the #9 place, there are several teams that are breathing behind their necks. Furthermore, Sampdoria’s recent form isn’t too great, but in their defense, Sampdoria had to face some really tough opponents lately.

Speaking of tough opponents, after the clash with AS Roma at home, Sampdoria travel to Milan to take on the incumbent champions, Inter.

There are some good news, however. Several of Sampdoria’s key men are making a comeback after missing out on the last couple of games. Their captain (who’s also their top scorer) Fabio Quagliarella is likely to return tonight. The same goes for Gaston Ramirez and Adrien Silva.

Furthermore, Antonio Candreva and Ernesto Torregrossa have also returned to training, but probably aren’t going to start the game. Instead, we might see them start the game on the bench.

AS Roma’s Injury Problems Keep Piling Up

At one point, everything seemed to be going in AS Roma’s favor. They were playing decent football domestically and they kept knocking out opponents in the Europa League. However, over the last couple of weeks, they’ve been pretty unimpressive.

This team is without a win since April 11, when they beat Bologna 1-0. Since then, we saw them lose three games and draw two across all competitions.

Their heaviest defeat of the season happened last Thursday in England when Man United beat them 6-2. What makes that defeat even worse is that AS Roma had a 2-1 lead at halftime. Losing in such a manner has certainly made a mess of their already-shaken confidence.

AS Roma would surely love to bounce back with a win against Sampdoria, but the issue is that their injury list seems to be getting longer and longer. Jordan Veretout, Pau Lopez, and Leonardo Spinazzola are definitely out, while AS Roma’s goalkeeper Pau Lopez remains doubtful.

He was subbed-off in the game against Manchester United, after struggling with a shoulder injury. His replacement was 37 year’ old Antonio Mirante who ended up conceding five goals. As it seems at this moment, Mirante will get between the sticks once again.

Sampdoria vs AS Roma Betting Picks

Anything can happen in a game like this. Even though AS Roma are the favorite at face value, the fact is that Sampdoria are in much better shape. For these reasons, predicting the outcome seems super-hard. Instead, a much better betting option is to go with goals – we should see a lot of them!

Prediction: Over 3.00 Goals
