Sanderson Farms Championship 2019 Betting Preview and Prediction

PGA Tour travels to Mississippi this Thursday, September 19, for the annual Sanderson Farms Championship, which will mark the second event of the season and the 25th year since the event was officially recognised as money event on the PGA Tour.

For the 2019/20 season, the tournament has seen some significant upgrades. Starting with 2019, Sanderson Farms Championship will not be an alternate event, but a stand-alone event, meaning the winner will receive the full benefits of a regular PGA Tour event, with 500 FedEx Cup points and an invitation to The Masters. The prize has also been revealed to be to $6.6 million, which is %50 increase compared to 2018 event. Out of $6.6 million, $1.8 will be reserved for the winner.

The event will once more take place at the historic Country Club of Jackson, which opened in early 1914. It features 27 championship holes, 18 of which were re-designed by former pro golfer John Fought in 2008 and measuring 7,400 yards (6,800m) from championship tees.

Favourites & Players to watch

Joaquin Niemann – Odds: 13.00

The 20-year-old Chilean golfer enters the Sanderson Farms Championship as the favourite, and for all the right reasons. The youngster produced an impressive win last week at Greenbrier classic, which marked the first PGA win of his career. As it stands now, Niemann moved up from No. 84 up to No. 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings and will look to reach new heights in Mississippi.

Brandt Snedeker – Odds: 19.00

Brand Snedker is the third favourite to win in Mississippi, yet is the one of the best golfers on the field. Looking back at last season, Snedeker played very well, finishing in the top 10 in two of his last three PGA Tour starts. Overall, the 38-year-old American pro finished the 2018/19 PGA Tour with six top 10s, including a T5 finish at The Players Championship. That being said, he was widely inconsistent with his performances. Despite a very solid season throughout, Snedeker finished T50 or worse in eight events. His inconsistency could easily be contributed to his inability to find the green in regulation (ranked 143rd in greens in regulation). While the nine-time PGA Tour champion is expected to make a strong run in Mississippi, we don’t see him as a strong pick here.

Corey Conners – Odds: 29.00

Corey Conners is priced as high as 33.00 to win the title, making him one of the underdogs. That being said, he does have the potential to produce a strong finish here. Looking at last season, Conners performed extremely well. He finished in the top 25 in three out of last four PGA Tour starts. Furthermore, he finished last season as rank one in the PGA Tour greens in regulation (73.06%), which gives him a huge advantage over his opponents, most notably Brandt Snedeker, who as we have established failed to impress in that department. Adding to that, Conners reached a respectable second-place finish here last year, making us believe he has got what it takes to make a strong run this year as well.

Dark horse pick – Ryan Armour – Odds: 81.00

Ryan Armour won at Country Club of Jackson back in 2017, yet failed to impress in Mississippi last year when he finished T54. That being said, he managed to finish the season strong, making us believe he can translate his form into this season. That, however, was not the case, as he missed the cut at the Greenbrier last weekend. Seeing how Armour severely underperformed in West Virginia could be a reason for concern ahead of Sanderson Farms Championship. But, we cannot simply ignore the fact Ryan Armour won here once before, which is why he is our dark horse pick.

Verdict & Prediction

Joaquin Niemann has been recognised as the favourite to win here and while we do believe he could do it, we won’t be backing him up, as we do believe there are better picks out there, especially considering the low odds offered on the Chilean golfer. That being said, we will also avoid backing up Brandt Snedeker mostly due to his inconsistency and inability to find the green in regulation, which could and most likely will significantly harm his chances to claim a win here.

With that in mind, we have found Corey Conners to be a solid pick to finish deep at Sanderson Farms Championship. He remains a longshot to win, however, with a second-place finish last season, we cannot deny he could impress once more and compete for the title.
