Sydney FC v Brisbane Roar – A-League Betting Preview and Prediction

The league leaders, Sydney FC are set to play host to Brisbane Roar this Saturday, December 12, at Jubilee Oval, hoping to keep their streak alive and keep their distance ahead of Melbourne City who sit at the second spot in the league.

Sydney FC four-game winning streak

Sydney FC have cemented themselves as the league leaders, where they sit with a 6-0-1 record and 18 points, which sits them two points above Melbourne City with one more game in hand. It’s safe to say things are looking up for the Sky Blues and their recent run only adds to the optimism in Sydney’s camp.

Looking back at their last five, Sydney suffered their first defeat of the season at the end of October against WS Wanderers (0:1), but quickly brushed themselves off and produced a streak of four consecutive wins against Newcastle Jets (4:1), Melbourne Victory (2:1), Perth Glory (3:1) and Western United (2:0) on Sunday.

Their clash against Western United proved to be a fairly easy bout, which went exactly as Sydney had hoped it would. The Sky Blues scored the game opener in the 27th minute to which they added another one in 45’+4. both times it was Le Fonder who scored and Baumjohann who produced an assist. The second half was much quieter as there were no goals on display from neither side. The game ended 2:0 in favor of the visitors who are storming through A-League and will look to keep the fire going this weekend.

It’s worth noting Western United ended the match with 61% ball possession and 22 goal attempts. That said, they only managed to shoot the ball towards the goal twice. Sydney on the other side shot the ball 6/8 and on that day it all really came down to the efficiency of shots or lack of it for WU.

Brisbane Roar looking to break into top six

Brisbane Roar are entering their eighth fixture of the season with a 2-2-3 record and eight points next to their name, which sits them at seventh place in the league, one point short of reaching Perth Glory and two points short of reaching fifth-placed Western United, meaning a win here would guarantee them a spot in the top six.

In Roar’s last five fixtures, they drew with WS Wanderers (0:0), lost to Adelaide United (0:1), defeated Melbourne City (4:3), lost to Wellington Phoenix (1:2) and won their most recent bout with Central Coast Mariners (2:0).

Brisbane’s win over CCM was a solid effort from Fowler and his men. The hosts scored the game opener in 61st minute with the help of O’Donovan who scored his first against his former employer, before Neville scored the second goal, only five minutes later. CCM, despite their best efforts, failed to catch up to Roar and had to settle with their fourth defeat of the year. Roar ended the match with 52% ball possession, 16 goal attempts and six shots on goal, while CCM shot the ball 5/16 with 48% ball possession. While CCM failed to score a goal, Roar’s defense looked a little iffy, seeing how they let CCM put up 16 goal attempts and five shots on goal.

Verdict & Prediction

The last six meetings between Sydney and Brisbane ended with the two sides splitting three victories each. The most recent meeting ended with a shocking 0:2 win for Brisbane, who knocked Sydney out of the FFA Cup. What makes that result even worse is the fact that Sydney suffered the defeat at home stadium.

For that, Sydney will be looking to get their revenge and considering how strong they looked like in previous fixtures, we would not dare to say the Sky Blues aren’t the favorites here. The key man in our eyes is Le Fondre, who scored one against Perth Glory and two against Western United last round. He already has seven goals to his name this season and from the looks of it, he is not planning on stopping scoring goals anytime soon. Furthermore, he has 11 shot assists, meaning he is a force to be reckoned with, and a player Brisbane will have a hard time stopping.

We were not too satisfied with Brisbane’s defense in the last round and to be completely fair, their defense had one too many iffy moments to convince us they can keep this one close. Sydney might have lost to Roar in August, but we can’t expect to see a similar result here. The Sky Blues have been on the rise and seeing how they won three out of their last five fixtures with at least two goals to spare, we will trust them to do the same here.
