Sydney FC v Macarthur FC
When: Sunday, February 28 – 16:05 AEDT
Where: Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
Weather: Cloudy, 27°C
Last time out, Sydney FC fell to Melbourne City (2-3) at AAMI Park, which ended the Sky Blue’s streak of three games without a loss. The reigning A-League champions are now fifth in the league with a 3-2-2 record and 11 points, which sits seven points behind Central Coast Mariners and only three points behind the second-placed Brisbane Roar with one more game in hand.
In their match with Melbourne City, Sydney fell behind by two goals by the 28th minute and conceded their third in 53rd. After finding themselves in an unenviable position, Sydney FC finally got their wheels spinning and scored twice in 72nd and 90th minute, but it was too late, too little to secure a point.
With Adam Le Fondre gone and Kosta Barbarouses unable to find his form, Sydney are in a difficult position and while they’re still the back-to-back champions, they’re clearly not the same powerhouse they once were.
Their next opponents, Macarthur FC got completely trashed by Western United (1-4) last Saturday, when they suffered their third loss of the season. Similar to Sydney in their last outing, the Bulls conceded twice in the first half and twice more by the 66th minute without producing any response up until the dying moments of the match when Matt Derbyshire scored his sixth goal of the season and his fifth in the last five.
Despite that loss, the Bulls are still third in the league, only four points off Mariners, so it’s not like they’re struggling in their A-League debut. What’s more, Macarthur have already beaten Adelaide United (4-0) and Brisbane Roar (2-0) and forced a 2-2 draw with WS Wanderers prior to that defeat so it’s hard to be overly critical of this team.
In their match with Wanderers, Bulls had 61% ownage of the ball and shot with a fairly solid 7/20 on target, with one shot hitting the woodwork, so it’s fair to say they were a bit unlucky. I expect them to perform much better this time out.
Sydney FC and Macarthur FC last met at the end of January, when Sydney FC won with 3-0 at Campbelltown Stadium. That, however, was just one of few games where Sydney looked good and I don’t believe we will be seeing another such result on Sunday.
Even though Sydney are not a terrible team, they’re severely overrated and I will continue to believe that until we see some stability from them. Macarthur are much stronger than what their 1-4 loss to Western United might suggest and while winning this match won’t be easy, I would not be surprised if the league newcomers grab a revenge win this weekend.
Prediction: Macarthur FC +0.75 Asian Handicap
