Sydney FC and Adelaide United will meet on Saturday, October 22 on the final day of A-League Round 3. It will mark their first meeting since April when Adelaide United edged out a 3-2 away victory in the 22nd round of the 2021/22 A-League season.
Sydney FC vs Adelaide United
- When: Saturday, October 22 – 15:00 AEDT
- Where: Sydney Football Stadium in Sydney, Australia
- Weather: Cloudy, 25°C
Adelaide won their first head-to-head match against Sydney FC since March 2021, the last time these two clubs met, but according to the latest A-League betting odds, this affair should favour the hosts. But is that a fair assessment or is there more to Adelaide than meets the eye?
Sydney FC – A Must-Win Match
Sydney FC kicked off the 2022/23 A-League season with a loss against Melbourne Victory, who bested them 3-2 at Sydney Football Stadium with an 83-minute goal via Sydney FC’s former player Joshua Brillante. But despite the rough start to the season, Sydney FC bounced back with a commanding 3-1 victory against the defending champions, Western United.
It was a solid performance from Sydney FC, although we would argue that the final score did not reflect what happened in the match. Sydney no doubt deserved to win, but Western United had their chances and had they been a bit luckier, the scoreline would be much closer. Granted, Sydney missed a penalty in the 24th minute, so take that as you may.
So far, Sydney FC have yet to disappoint, nor have they impressed us too much. They’re a solid team that knows how to hold their ground.
Interestingly, they were one of the worst home teams last season (4-4-5), having collected just one more point at home than on the road. Still, the former A-league top dogs have made necessary changes this offseason and are bound to show a bit more by the end of this year.
Adelaide United – A Bit Unlucky
Adelaide United enter the third round of 2022/23 A-League with just one point to their name. They played a draw in the season opener against Wellington Phoenix (1-1) but lost their round-two match against Macarthur FC, who bested them 2-0 on Sunday.
On paper, Adelaide are in terrible form, but there’s more to their recent performances than what the results would suggest. In Adelaide’s loss against Macarthur FC, they played solid football but just couldn’t capitalise on their chances.
Adelaide ended the match with 64% ball possession, 21 goal attempts and five on-goal. In contrast, Macarthur had produced just ten shots, of which five went towards the goal. A similar thing happened in Adelaide’s draw against the Nix, where they had 62% ball possession and shot the ball 6/20 – Wellington Phoenix shot the ball 3/6 with a 38% ball possession.
Whether Adelaide United are just unlucky or extremely inefficient in converting their chances is up to debate. But they’ve shown some promise, and that’s a good sign for the future.

Sydney FC vs Adelaide United A-League Betting Picks
Sydney FC and Adelaide have a long history between them and tend to meet quite frequently in big games. And even though Sydney FC hold a better head-to-head record, Carl Veart has torched the Sydney side several times before.
This promises to be another exciting affair that won’t disappoint, and while there are reasons to like Adelaide United, Sydney FC at 1.90 is too good to ignore, and we have to add it to our A-League betting picks sheet.
