Toulouse v Reims – Ligue 1 Betting Preview and Prediction
Toulouse are sitting at the bottom of the league table and will look to find their way out with a win this Saturday against Reims, who will take a trip down to Stadium Municipal where Toulouse hold a 3-0-5 record.
Toulouse looking to salvage something from this season
Toulouse are entering the weekend’ clash with Reims having lost all of their last seven fixtures, which is a very disappointing sight to see for a team that has had a solid start of their campaign. Looking back at Toulouse’s opening five fixtures of 2019/20 season, they drew with Brest (1:1), defeated Dijon (1:0), lost to PSG (0:4), defeated Amiens (2:0) and drew with St. Ettiene (2:2) which, as we have said was a solid start. That being said, they fell flat in September when their struggles started to surface.
In their last seven league fixtures, Toulouse lost to Rennes (2:3), Lyon (2:3), Montpellier (0:3), Marseille (0:2), Nantes (1:2), Monaco (1:2) and most recently Strasbourg (2:4). Despite letting go of Alain Casanova and appointing Antoine Komboure on October 14, Toulouse only managed to win once match against Lille (2:1), which was their only win before the seven-game slump began. Suffice to say Antoine Komboure did not have the best possible start of his campaign as a head coach, seeing how Toulouse won three points out of a possible 24 since he took over and while he remains at his position as a head coach, he should start worrying about his future if Les Pitchouns don’t improve.
In their most recent fixture against Strasbourg, Toulouse scored an early goal in the third minute but suffered two in seventh and 26th minute, meaning they entered the second half one goal down. Strasbourg added their third of the day in the 48th minute and Toulouse responded with their second in 50th minute. Unfortunately, they failed to score an equalizer and instead suffered one more in 75th minute, which more or less sealed the deal for the visitors. Despite their poor results, we have to say Toulouse were a bit unfortunate with conceding late goals and receiving red cards in some of their fixtures. Against Monaco, they conceded a goal in 84th minute, against Nantes, Toulouse saw Kone receive his second yellow only 23 minutes in, and against Marseille, they were one man down from 42nd minute, again due to a red card.
Reims looking to break into top four
Reims are entering the weekend’s bout with a 6-6-4 on the year and 1-3-1 in their last five. In regards to their last five matches, Reims lost to Nice (0:2), drew with Angers (0:0), Metz (1:1) and Bordeaux (1:1) and won their most recent bout with St. Etienne (3:1).
In their match against St Etienne, it would be hard to say Reims deserved to win with such a margin, seeing how teams performed fairly equally well. While they were slightly more active in the first half, with 53% ball possession, five-goal attempts and one shot on goal, St Etienne did not trail behind too hard, seeing how they produced two shots on goal out of four goal attempts with 47% ball possession. Unfortunately for the visitors, Reims scored the opening goal of the game in the 10th minute, meaning they entered the second half one goal up. St Etienne responded with an equalizer in 59th minute but conceded twice in 67th and 90’+2 to lose their sixth match of the season 1:3. As we see it, Reims were a bit lucky to win that match, as there was not a lot to separate the two sides. In fact, we would even go on to say St Etienne played slightly better, however, failed to take their chances better. A deserved win for the hosts nonetheless.
Verdict & Prediction
This match will be played at Stadium de Toulouse, which should give Toulouse a massive advantage considering 80% of their points came from playing at home. Reims on the other side are 3-1-3 travelers, with a loss against Nice (0:2) and a draw against Metz (1:1) as their last two away games, which fails to inspire much hope they can impress here. Reims might be the favorites to win here, but we don’t believe they will have an easy time doing so. Toulouse are desperate for points and playing at home should add the needed motivation for them to walk away with at least a point if not more. Pick the hosts to deliver at very generous odds.
