Newcastle Jets took care of business last round when they demolished Wellington Phoenix 3-1 at McDonald Jones Stadium, cementing their spot in the upper part of the A-League table. But can they keep their winning streak alive, or will Newcastle Jets have to admit defeat to Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday?
Western Sydney Wanderers vs Newcastle Jets
- When: Friday, October 28 – 19:45 AEDT
- Where: CommBank Stadium in Sydney, Australia
- Weather: Clear, 19°C
Western Sydney and Newcastle Jets last met in April 202, when WS Wanderers edged out a 3-2 victory, avenging their loss from two months back and adding their second head-to-head victory since January 2021. And even though the teams have been going back and forth for most of their history, the recent A-League betting odds suggest that this one might play out similarly to the April meeting.
Western Sydney Wanderers – A Chance To Take Over The League
Western Sydney Wanderers have been holding on well so, as they enter the fourth round with a solid 2-1-0 record. They’ve looked unstoppable early into the season, beating Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory; however, WS Wanderers struggled to achieve the same level of success last week when they had to settle for a draw (1-1) against Brisbane Roar.
Despite securing just a point from the affair, WS Wanderers played well and were arguably the better team on the day. Wanderers opened the scoring via Sulejman Krpic, who netted his second goal of the season only five minutes after the kickoff. But, unfortunately, that was all WS Wanderers could produce on the other side of the field.
Regardless, WS Wanderers showed a lot of good qualities in the back, keeping Brisbane Roar at only seven goal attempts and three shots on goal, and 1/2 in the second half. Though it’s no secret that WS Wanderers have a very solid backline, having conceded just one goal this season – a joint-best record along with Melbourne Victory (6-1).
Newcastle Jets – Three In A Row?
Newcastle Jets are 2-0-0 ahead of this affair, which is fairly impressive and somewhat unexpected. That said, they were the favourites for both of their 2022/23 A-League clashes against Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix.
The Jets opened up the season with a solid 2-1 victory against Perth Glory and then added a dominant 3-1 victory against Wellington Phoenix last week. Interestingly Newcastle Jets scored all three goals in the first half (4’, 16’, 44’), which is impressive. However, they looked toothless in the second half, having managed just two goal attempts and no shots on goal.
Admittedly, they didn’t need to score more goals to collect all three points, but it’s not like the Jets impressed us with their defensive efforts. They kept the Nix out of the net, but Newcastle Jets also allowed the visitors 18 shots – luckily, only five went towards the net.
Newcastle Jets were the better team on the day, but we wouldn’t call their performance good.
Western Sydney Wanderers vs Newcastle Jets Betting Odds
Western Sydney Wanderers head into this match as 2.00 (2.07 PInnacle) favourites, Newcastle Jets are priced as 3.60 (3.72) underdogs, while sports betting sites offer 3.60 (3.62) on a draw.
WS Wanderers opened as 1.98 favourites on October 22, while Newcastle Jets were initially priced as 3.83 underdogs, so it’s fair to say that the betting odds haven’t moved by much. Even now, you can grab WS Wanders at 2.00 on most bookmakers, although you’re getting the best offer on Pinnacle.
Western Sydney Wanderers vs Newcastle Jets A-League Betting Picks
Three of the last six head-to-head meetings between WS Wanderers and Newcastle Jets ended in stalemates, whilst the remaining three ended with minimal margin, suggesting we’re in for a very close affair.
However, based on what we’ve seen from the Jets and WS Wanderers this season, it’s fair to favour the latter. That is mainly due to their sturdy backline, which includes Marcelo and Lawrence Thomas, who are a big reason why WS Wanderers are so resilient.
Admittedly, facing the attacking-minded Jets won’t be easy, but perhaps it will be an even tougher task for the visitors to break through WS Wanderers’ backline. It could be a close one, but we’ll start our Round 4 A-League betting picks with a bet on Western Sydney Wanderers.
- Prediction: Western Sydney Wanderers to win
