Betting-Previews.com brings you betting tips and predictions for three Round 1 games in the 2021 US Open. Here are our betting previews and picks for Su-Wei Hsieh vs Claire Liu, Ludmilla Samsonova vs Katie Boulter, and Karolína Muchová vs Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Su-Wei Hsieh vs Claire Liu
When: Tuesday, August 31 – 16:15 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Cloudy, 28°
Su-Wei Hsieh and Claire Liu will lock horns this Tuesday, in what promises to be exciting between a 35-year-old former no.23 and Claire Liu, who has recently reached a career-high rank of 100.
At 35 years of age, Su-Wei Hsieh’s career is slowly coming to an end, but she still has it in her. What’s more, she is 61.1% on hard courts and has made it to the quarter-finals in Melbourne earlier this year, beating the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Markéta Vondroušová.
Liu is 39/14 on the year and has already won two tournaments, albeit both were on clay, where Liu is at a 69.3% win rate. However, the American is only 55.7% on hard courts, which isn’t that convincing even though she has made it to the semi-finals in Chicago, only to lose against the up-and-coming Emma Raducanu.
Su-Wei Hsieh is at her best on hard courts while Liu usually struggles. What’s more, Su-Wei Hsieh has already won against some of the biggest names on tour this year, whereas Liu has yet to reach that level.
Prediction: Su-Wei Hsieh to win
Ludmilla Samsonova vs Katie Boulter
When: Tuesday, August 31 – 16:15 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Cloudy, 28°
Katie Boulter needed three sets to defeat Vitalia Diatchenko and Kristína Kučová in the qualifiers, which isn’t too convincing. Results like that indicate that while Boulter got the job done, she might not be at the level needed to compete against the top dogs.
Ludmilla Samsonova is fresh off a tournament win in Berlin, where she beat Victoria Azarenka and the Olympics gold medallist Belinda Bencic. What’s more, she also took down Kudermetova, Keys, and Vondrousova to round up an awe-inspiring list of top-tier players who she beat on the year.
Boulter has had some flashes of greatness, but she is not at the level of Samsonova. The 22-year-old should get the job done in straight sets.
Prediction: Ludmilla Samsonova -1.5 sets
Karolína Muchová vs Sara Sorribes Tormo
When: Tuesday, August 31 – 16:15 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Cloudy, 28°
Karolína Muchová impressed us by reaching the quarter-finals in Wimbledon. She is now 19/10 on YTD and is known to raise her game for Grand Slam tournaments – as evident earlier this year when she made it to the semi-finals at the 2021 Australian Open.
Muchová has the experience and the resilience to compete at big events and should be ready to take on Sara Sorribes Tormo as she looks to challenge for her first Grand Slam title. Last year, she made it to R4 at US Open, which marked her best placement here following two R3 exits in 2018 and 2019.
Sara Sorribes Tormo has had an awe-inspiring run of late. She reached the quarter-finals in Montreal and semi-finals in Cleveland. Results like that would suggest that Sara Sorribes Tormo is in excellent form and one of the candidates to hoist the trophy; however, we have to disagree.
Sara Sorribes Tormo has lost a couple of games, which show limitations in her play, and it seems like she is best suited for lower grade tournaments and not Grand Slams. Sara Sorribes Tormo can be good, but raising her game to the level needed to win a Grand Slam might be too much to ask.
Prediction: Karolína Muchová -2.5 games
