Betting-Previews.com brings you another set of Tennis betting previews and predictions for the second round of play at the 2021 US Open. Here are our best bets for four games, slated for Thursday, September 2.
Shuai Zhang vs Emma Raducanu
When: Thursday, September 2 – 12:00 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Sunny, 21°C
Emma Raducanu dropped the ball when she met with Shuai Zhang in San Jose and lost with 3-6, 2-6. Even though only a month has passed since then, we expect Raducanu to do better this time out.
It’s important to note that the previous match was Raducanu’s first fixture since Wimbledon, and she was clearly a bit ring rusty. The Brit has since found her form and has reached the quarter-finals in Landisville and the finals in Chicago.
Even in the 2021 US Open qualifiers, Raducanu hasn’t shown any weaknesses, neither did she disappoint in the first round of the US Open, where Raducanu disposed of Stefanie Vogele with 6-2, 6-3.
With the improvement and the form Raducanu has been showing of late, it’s hard to doubt her chances to avenge her loss against Zhang.
Prediction: Emma Raducanu
Shelby Rogers vs Sorana Cirstea
When: Thursday, September 2 – 15:15 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Sunny, 23°C
We wouldn’t blame anyone for liking Shelby Rogers. She is a very consistent player with solid results on her resume, but she has some obvious weaknesses.
On a more positive note, Rogers has already beaten Sorana Cristea, albeit it happened in 2016, and the match was played on clay, so it doesn’t make much sense to overvalue that result.
If we look back, Cirstea hasn’t achieved much in the tournaments she has attended of late. However, the Romanian has made it to the finals in Strasbourg and R4 in Rome.
What’s more, Cirstea won against Azarenka in the second round of the 2021 Wimbledon and didn’t disappoint in the first round of the 2021 US Open when she eliminated Veronika Kudermentova (7-6, 3-6, 6-0). If Cirstea can show the same fire today, she should make it past Rogers.
Prediction: Sorana Cirstea
Ajla Tomljanovic Vs Petra Martic
When: Thursday, September 2 – 17:15 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Sunny, 23°C
Ajla Tomljanovic is enjoying an excellent season. Most recently, she has made it to the quarter-finals in London, which is a strong indication of her qualify; however, she has yet to defeat Petra Martic, who is 2-0 up in the head-to-head. What’s more, Martic is a higher-rated player, and for a good reason.
The Croatian might not be as good as she once was, but she has shown improvement of late. She put up a good fight against the eventual quarter-finalist, Paula Badosa, in Cincinnati and has impressed with her clean 6-3, 6-2 victory against Dalma Falfi in the first round of the US Open.
What’s more, Martic has made it to R4 here last year and a year prior. We like the 30-year-old better at the offered odds.
Prediction: Petra Martic
Karolina Pliskova vs Amanda Anisimova
When: Thursday, September 2 – 21:00 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Clear, 19°C
Karolina Pliskova has yet to lose against Amanda Anisimova across their three meetings (3-0). One of those clashes happened a couple of weeks back in Canada; however, it’s fair to mention that the second set was very close and could have easily ended in favour of the American player, who eventually fell flat in a tiebreaker (8-10).
Pliskova edged her way into the second round of the 2021 US Open with a close 6-3, 6-4 victory against Caty McNally on Tuesday, and while she deserved to win, we weren’t impressed with Pliskova’s showings on the day.
It seems like Pliskova is relying too much on her big serve to grab points, which didn’t work as expected on the day. The Czech will need to improve if she wishes to achieve the same success today.
Combining Pliskova’s iffy showings in round one with the fact that Anisimova will enjoy home support are two significant factors that make us like the American player better. Anisimova seems a bit overpriced at the offered odds.
Prediction: Amanda Anisimova
