Betting-Previews.com returns with another set of 2021 WTA US Open betting picks and predictions for the fourth round of play at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Here are our betting previews and picks for Karolina Pliskova vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Maria Sakkari vs Bianca Andreescu.
Karolina Pliskova vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
When: Monday, September 6 – 17:00 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Sunny, 25°C
Karolina Pliskova has made it to round four of the 2021 US Open with a clean performance against Ajla Tomljanovic (6-3, 6-2). The 29-year-old has had a much easier time in R3 compared to what he had to endure in the second round, where she edged past Amanda Anisimova with 7-5, 6-7, 7-6.
It was a solid showing from the Czech, grated we have to acknowledge that Tomljanovic hasn’t put up much of a fight and was quite disappointing with what she had shown on the day.
Like her compatriot, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had to work the hardest in round two when she made it past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (6-2, 5-7, 6-2). Her other two 2021 US Open bouts ended in straight sets – against Alison Riske (6-4, 6-2) and Varvara Gracheva (6-1, 6-4), who Pavlyuchenkova sent packing in R3.
The 30-year-old is now through to R4 for the first time since 2011 when she made it all the way into the quarter-finals. Since then, Pavlyuchenkova hasn’t managed to make it past R3 (2013, 2016). Regardless, she is in excellent form heading into tonight’s match and has been for a good portion of the season.
Pavlyuchenkova made it to the semi-finals in Madrid and the finals of the 2021 French Open. She has since also reached the quarter-finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. With such results, it should not come off as a surprise that she has won against many high-profile names over the season – including Pliskova, who she beat in the second round in Marid with 6-0, 7-5.
Prediction: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to win – 2.45 at Sportmarket
Maria Sakkari vs Bianca Andreescu
When: Monday, September 6 – 21:00 EDT
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York
Weather: Clear, 23°C
Maria Sakkari has yet to disappoint at the 2021 US Open. She beat Marta Kostyuk (6-4, 6-3) in R1, Katerina Siniakova (6-4, 6-2) in R2, and Petra Kvitova (6-4, 6-3) in R3. From what we have learned from Sakkari is that she is very effective against players who come at her, which should serve as an added advantage as she takes on Bianca Andreescu for the first time since the Miami Open semi-finals when the Canadian tennis player won with 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.
Even though Sakkari lost the previous head-to-head bout, it could have easily ended in her favour. It’s anyone’s guess how she managed to lose. Some may argue that it had to do with Sakkari’s tendency to underdeliver in tournaments, which might be the case, but she’s a changed player now.
Andreescu made it through to the fourth round of the 2021 US Open by beating Viktorija Golubic (7-5, 4-6, 7-5), Lauren Davis (6-4, 6-4), and Greet Minnen (6-1, 6-2), which are solid results, but we are not particularly impressed.
The 21-year-old has won her maiden Grand Slam here in 2019 but has since not reached further than R2 in any majors. Andreescu made it to R2 in Australia earlier this year but suffered two round-one eliminations from France and Wimbledon.
It should be an exciting affair, but based on what we have seen from these two players, we have to favour Sakkari more. She is in excellent form, while Andreescu isn’t quite there yet.
Sakkari is 7-3 across her last 10 outings, while Andreescu has managed to win only half of her games over the same stretch. Sakkari’s only three losses came against Elina Svitolina, Victoria Azarenka, and Angelique Kerber.
Prediction: Maria Sakkari -2.5 games – 1.98 at Sportmarket
